When Burger King launched their line of grilled hot dogs, Tampa-based franchise Checkers & Rally's took that as an act of war. The 850+ unit brand launched a "Wiener War" against the King with a full page ad in USA Today, noting that they've been doing wieners for more than 30 years.
A recent Tampa Bay Times story reported that the brand was reducing the cost of their wieners to less than half of the price they're being sold for at Burger King as retaliation.
"When Burger King made their announcement, we laughed," Terri Snyder, chief marketing officer of Checkers & Rally's, said in a statement in the Tampa Bay Times story. "We're engaged in a fun, aggressive and provocative Wiener War with Burger King. And it's a war we plan to win. You can get one of our great dogs for less than half the price of theirs."
The TBT also notes that according to ISBISWorld, the hot dog and sausage industry grew by 4.1 percent to $165 billion in 2014.
