TechCrunch: Instagram Launches Mobile Web Sharing to Pursue Global Growth

Additional mobile website features will help user growth throughout the world.

Instagram would like users across the world to use the photo sharing app, whether or not they can download it. According to a recent TechCrunch article, Instagram has added photo sharing and a basic version of the Explore tab to its mobile website. This is a major change from the old mobile website capabilities of simply liking, following, searching and viewing notifications. Although, photo sharing from the desktop site is a feature that is still not available.

“Instagram.com (accessed from mobile) is a web experience optimized for mobile phones. It’s designed to help people have a fuller experience on Instagram no matter what device or network they are on,” the company said.

With 80 percent of Instagram’s users located outside of the U.S., the mobile web launch aligns with the company’s global growth strategy. Users in the developing world often don’t have a fast enough cellular network or enough phone storage to be able to download Instagram’s app.
