QSR Magazine: Starbucks Begins Testing Cashless Store in Seattle

The brand will evaluate consumer and employee feedback before expanding this payment process.

Starbucks is experimenting with an entirely cashless location. According to a recent article in QSR Magazine, a Seattle store will only be accepting cards and mobile payments. The coffee giant will be evaluating customer and employee feedback on the experience in order to decide whether this initiative should be applied to more locations.

Advantages of a cashless store include a more efficient ordering process, fewer opportunities for theft and a chance for businesses to track more data on consumers due to reduced anonymity. However, without a cash option, there is a service fee for the transaction.

Starbucks is no stranger to embracing technology. The brand's mobile app allows customers to order and make purchases directly from the app. Membership in the company's mobile rewards program surpasses 13 million active users.
