NRN: Subway Executive Tells NRN what Drives Global Growth

Subway’s VP of development James Walker examines U.S. closures and relocations

Subway executive James Walker delivered a speech titled “Location, Location, Location” during the annual NRA conference last week in Chicago. Walker addressed some of the recent buzz over Subway’s plan to close dozens of restaurants in the U.S. and the brand’s intention to target international growth.

As reported by Nation's Restaurant News, James Walker is teaming up with development agents, as well as their franchisees, and making decisions based on profitability and what is right for the franchisee. He said, “We’ll still be making decisions every day about what we can do to help our franchisees be more profitable and more successful 50 years in the future.”

When asked by NRN why Subway is interested in expanding to international markets, he stated, “There’s a lot of pent-up demand for the brand right now in certain global markets. Right now, we’ve got a lot of markets like China, for example, where we have so much demand and love for the brand that we can grow there exponentially for many, many years to come.”
