NRN: McDonald’s to Phase Out Plastic Straws in UK and Ireland

The environmentally minded initiative will roll out in additional countries later this year and next

McDonald’s is replacing plastic straws with paper ones in 1,300 restaurants throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, according to an article in Nation’s Restaurant News.

The transition will begin in September and is expected to complete before the end of 2019. Some McDonald’s restaurants in Belgium are also testing alternatives to plastic straws, and additional trials are planned for restaurants in the U.S., France, Sweden, Malaysia, Norway and Australia later this year.

The initiative is part of the franchise’s ongoing effort to promote sustainability throughout its supply chain.

“We hope this work will support industry-wide change and bring sustainable solutions to scale,” said Francesca DeBiase, McDonald’s executive vice president of global supply chain and sustainability.
