Margaritas, limes, salt and salsa is the name of the game on Cinco de Mayo. The day, which originated in Mexican-American communities, is now observed as a celebration of Mexican culture and pride in the United States. While it’s not Mexico’s Independence Day as many people assume, it celebrates an unexpected Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In Mexico, the day is observed with celebrations, battle re-enactments and political speeches. The celebrations are a little different here in the U.S. The world’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration takes place in Los Angeles, with festivals drawing 300,000 people; New York, Denver and Houston also host large parties. With festivities well under way, many restaurants see an uptick in sales, and the California Avocado Commission claims Americans consume up to 81 million avocados on Cinco de Mayo. Guacamole anyone? Restaurants like On the Border reports it’s their busiest day of the year – storewide, the Mexican chain will serve 3.6 times more margaritas and specialty drinks and 2.7 times more beer on Cinco de Mayo than on any other day. Carrollton, Texas-based chain, TGI Friday’s stockpiles tequila and limes for the day and even created a month-long, special menu for Cinco de Mayo. The new drink list is lengthy, and includes frozen specialties like the Horny ‘Rita, Tequila Sunrise and the Mexican Lager. Popular dining chain Chili’s posted a coupon for a free appetizer or dessert, which can be redeemed all day today with the purchase of an adult entree. Get the coupon here. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Moe’s Southwest Grill with a free order of their Spicy Guacamole, good all day. Grab a drink, grab some tortilla chips and enjoy your day partying for our neighbors to the south and their rich culture and colors. ¡Salud!
