From Technology to Health and Wellness, How One Couple Took The Leap and Joined Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa

Knowing nothing about the spa industry, the Kline’s now own nine spas in the Pacific Northwest and aren’t looking back

When Brian Kline and his wife were ready to sell their technology hardware business, they weren’t sure what path they would take for future job opportunities. After working with a business broker, the couple found Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa. They had no experience in the health and wellness industry but quickly found themselves taking on two spas in Oregon and Washington. That was four years ago. The Kline’s now own nine spas in the Pacific Northwest and have built the thriving business of their dreams. 1851 Franchise caught up with Brain Kline and he shared his insight into the success he’s found with the spa franchise.

“It feels like we’ve been doing this forever,” shared Kline after reflecting on his days before he joined Hand and Stone. “My wife and I were looking for a change and the health and wellness industry really stood out. We workout and like to stay in shape and had even been to a Hand and Stone. We really like the business model, the recurring revenue and there was a significant upside we saw for growth in the region.”

The Kline’s excitement for the brand was solidified when Hand and Stone founder John Marco visited the couple to drive their new locations right after their deal closed. “When John Marco came out, that set the bar for us. We understood what he expected and why he loves the business so much. The corporate team was so supportive, they really helped us out.”

The first two years went by in a flash and the couple worked out the kinks alongside a Regional Manager that was already in place when they took over the store. It was clear that they had chosen the right industry early on. “We really liked our members and our employees. People like to see you and feel happier when they walk out the door,” shared Kline.

Their success came fast and the couple quickly took over two more stores, bought two stores and development a handful more. Now with almost 10 stores under their purview, the Klines are seeing the fruits of their labor.

Said Kline, “I used to travel a lot for work but now we travel for fun and we make it a point to travel as much as we can.”

With a great support team in place, the Klines are excited about the future of the brand. They believe in the vision of the company and they know the future is bright.

“We're very pleased with the direction the company is taking,” shared Kline. “We're very motivated to grow the facial side of the business and we appreciate what corporate has done to provide other opportunities for revenue streams. We have good relationships with the corporate team and we’re usually in sync with what they’re trying to do. We’re still very much excited about the opportunities and the industry.”
