Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, which makes luxurious spa experiences available to the masses, is expanding its services to Detroit. Grosse Pointe resident John Van Osdol has signed on to open the franchise in Detroit in late fall of this year.
Van Osdol spent 33 years in the advertising and television business, making his mark working with big-name brands like Jeep, Chrysler and General Motors; producing an Olympics-premiering commercial in 1994 that was named “Best in the World” at that year’s Cannes; and landing a spot in Crain’s “40 Under 40” in 1998.
After such a whirlwind career, Van Osdol decided he wanted a new challenge—owning his own business, but within the framework of a proven model. Enter Hand & Stone. Van Osdol is currently sourcing real estate in the Golden Corridor neighborhood of Sterling Heights and targeting a November 2019 opening. He plans to open an additional two or three locations in the market down the road.
“I was intrigued by Hand & Stone because of the whole idea of health and wellness. WIthin the last two or three years, I’ve really seen the benefits of a healthier lifestyle and using things like massage to promote my own wellbeing,” Van Osdol said. “Hand & Stone allows me to run my own business in that segment, but with a proven model. Hand & Stone’s 400+ franchise locations around the country are doing very well. There’s a comfort knowing that this formula works and I don’t have to build it from the ground up. And particularly with my background as a producer, I’m all about execution. The idea of executing a proven Hand & Stone franchise had a lot of appeal to me.”
Van Osdol said that the Detroit market is ready for a Hand & Stone location--or several--thanks to its increasing metropolitan population with discretionary income and growing interest in affordable spa-style services.
