Marketing Land: Facebook’s New Events App Could be a Trojan Horse Rival to Google Calendar

The new Events from Facebook app includes an in-app calendar that can sync with Apple’s iCal, Google Calendar and Microsoft’s Exchange.

Nearly nine percent of Facebook’s daily audience uses the event feature on the social network each day. According to a recent Marketing Land article, this has motivated Facebook to create a separate mobile app for this feature, called Events from Facebook, that could be more of a general purpose calendar than an event-specific one.

With the Events from Facebook app, users will be able to see what’s happening nearby and of course what their friends are planning on doing. In addition, the app contains a calendar for managing the rest of your life’s events, including work meetings and appointments.

What may be the most interesting feature is that a user can sync additional calendars they have with Facebook calendar from Apple’s iCal, Google Calendar and Microsoft’s Exchange. Now you can see your personal calendar with your work calendar, which may increase the likelihood people will want to use the app. The downside--your personal plans will be made public from the events you sign up for on Facebook, eliminating the provate nature of youer personal life and calendar.

The app is currently available only for iPhone users in the U.S. and will eventually be available to Android users.
