On Tuesday night Michael Jordan accepted his award as the Charlotte Business Journal Business Person of the Year, which culminated in a rather emotional 10-minute speech from the sports superstar.

Pushing his prepared speech aside, Jordan spoke from his heart at the Time Warner Cable Arena in front of a sold out, 350-person crowd. In his speech he told attendees he never thought he would own the Charlotte Hornets franchise. The NBA star has roots in North Carolina, which started growing after he moved to Wilmington from Brooklyn and then attending UNC Chapel Hill to play basketball. It was during his time there he brought the college basketball team to a national championship while he was a freshman in 1982.

Jordan paid a reported $175 million in 2010 to take majority control of the Hornets.  Now after five years of ownership, the previously mocked team began reviving its name, reeling in new sponsors, season-ticket holders and a new found interest from basketball fans.

"We've still got a long way to go as an organization," Jordan said to the audience.
