Nation's Restaurant News: Delivery is helping dinner grow again

The NPD Group found that 49 percent of all meals are consumed at home

To combat the trend in restaurant visits declining year over year, restaurants are meeting the people where they are: at home. According to Nation's Restaurant News, dinner traffic has been flat for several years but in the first quarter, the daypart saw an almost 1 percent increase followed by a 0.5 percent increase in the second quarter.

“The American consumer is just really centered around consuming meals at home today,” said David Portalatin, The NPD Group's vice president and food analyst. “We consume more dinner at home than we ever have in our history.”

The growth came largely from established chains, but micro-chains increased broadline distributors by nearly 5 percent. According to The NPD Group's findings, 49 percent of all meals are consumed at home, so businesses are meetings the consumers' needs in providing a delivery service.
