Nation's Restaurant News: Denny’s franchised units drag down 1Q systemwide same-store sales

Franchisees slow to adapt to delivery aided in lower sales.

Nation's Restaurant News reported that Denny's Corp. company-owned restaurants outperformed franchised units in the first quarter. The franchise reported a 3.2 percent same-store sales increase at company locations and only a 1.2 percent same-store sales increase at franchised locations.

Denny's CEO John Miller noted company-owned units partner with third-party delivery providers, which drove incremental sales. According to Miller, franchised units have been slow to adapt to delivery which impacted their growth.

The franchise continues to focus on aging down the brand through restaurant remodels, menu updates and digital expansion, with a goal of 80 percent of restaurants being redesigned by the end of 2018.
