There is a lot that goes into opening a franchise, and a franchisee has to juggle many different tasks and responsibilities.
So, how do you make the leap from one unit to several without the house of cards crashing down? In their June issue, Entrepreneur took a look at how some successful multi-unit franchisees charted a path to find success with multiple locations. For Smoothie King multi-unit franchisee Alexandra Myers, the timing is key for deciding when to scale up.
"Every business has to reach a critical mass before needing the appropriate systems and staff in place to maintain control," Myers told Entrepreneur. "Even if you own a few stores, you will still find yourself behind the counter on any given day if a manager or an employee doesn't show up. But eventually you reach a unit number where you can afford the management infrastructure to handle operations and any emergencies."
Myers owns nine Smoothie King locations, mainly inside military bases throughout the mid-Atlantic, Southeast and Texas.
