As a restaurant veteran, Trey Hornsby has seen it all in the franchising industry. Working for brands like Pizza Hut, Long John Silvers and A&W, his expertise led him to a senior executive operations role for Yum! Brands. But, after 18 years with Yum! Brands, a company he had been with since he graduated college, he went to work for Zoes Kitchen. This experience opened his eyes to being his own boss for the first time, so Trey and his wife Tracey bought the rights to the Kentucky territory and became a franchisee in 2010. They now own three locations. Being their own boss only got them more interested in franchise concepts, and when they came across the WORKOUT ANYTIME* brand they knew they wanted to diversify and expand their growing portfolio.

Trey and Tracey just opened their first WORKOUT ANYTIME in Bardstown, Kentucky, which also happens to be the 100th location for the WORKOUT ANYTIME brand.

We spoke with Trey about why he made the transition from the corporate sector to being a franchisee.

What was your perspective about franchising prior to joining?

There is a lot of uncertainty and risk when it comes to franchising, but also a lot of potential for reward. After working in corporate America for 18 years, I knew I wanted to be my own boss, and franchising was a good way to accomplish that. WORKOUT ANYTIME is different than any other experience I have had with the industry, but in so many positive ways. The simplicity of the model is refreshing and I’m excited to see how this experience evolves.

What is the top thing you think people don't understand about franchising?

I think people don’t fully understand the value of the support system in franchising compared to starting your own restaurant or gym where you have to do all the legwork from the ground up. Granted, you pay for that support but those tools are what make you successful. For example, your buying power is unmatched for equipment, goods, and other materials, due to the relationships that corporate has forged with vendors and partners.

How has being a franchisee changed your life?

Freedom is the best word for how franchising has changed my life. I get to make my own schedule and be my own boss. And, if you know your personal goals, the initial fears and risks that you may have about breaking into franchising all become worth it. People assume when you open a franchise that it’s a 24/7 business, and at times it can be. But, if you have a great team it’s the complete opposite, and that has been my experience.

Why did you pick WORKOUT ANYTIME?

One of the WORKOUT ANYTIME area developers, Greg Parker, is a great friend of mine and we have actually been working out together for many years. I knew the brand so well as a consumer that I felt WORKOUT ANYTIME was the best model for my wife Tracey and I. It was a great way to diversify our portfolio and enter the health and fitness sector of franchising.

What types of other brands did you look at?

I really can’t say I looked at any other brands besides WORKOUT ANYTIME. I have in the past being in the restaurant industry, but we didn’t consider any others in the health and fitness sector, as WORKOUT ANYTIME was such a great model and fit for us.

Why should someone buy a WORKOUT ANYTIME?

I think if you want to be your own boss and are willing to work hard for a high reward, WORKOUT ANYTIME is a great brand to consider. In addition, the brand has a strong support system that is there for you every step of the way, which is so important when looking at any concept.

What advice would you have for someone looking to become a franchisee?

Do your homework when looking into becoming a franchisee. There are a ton of brands out there to choose from, and it breaks my heart when I see a business fail. Do the research, know what you’re getting into and gain knowledge about the brand. Lastly, have a passion for what you’re doing – if your experience matches the brand you’re investing in, then you’re going to be successful.
