When you hire the right people, things go well — so well, in fact, that you might just end up starting a business with them. For Rich Naponelli and Diana Hyepock, that’s exactly what happened.&nbsp;After a long career spanning massive law firms and the University of Notre Dame, Naponelli was interested in building something on his own, so he purchased a pet care franchise in the Michiana area, hiring Hyepock as one of his first employees. Given her extensive background in the pet industry, hiring her was a no-brainer, and as their relationship grew, it became clear that they both had the shared goal of helping more people through dog training.It was this shared passion that led them to pursue franchising with&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/dogtrainingelite">Dog Training Elite*</a>, the 320-plus territory dog training franchise, together. With their sites set on future expansion, the two of them opened their first location in the Michiana area on August 1st and look forward to opening two additional locations in Chicago in December.1851 spoke with Naponelli and Hyepock about their journey into franchising with&nbsp;<a href="https://dogtrainingelite.com/franchise?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=attorney-and-dog-trainer-join-forces-with-dog-training-elite-franchise-2724364" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Dog Training Elite</a> and their plans for the future.&nbsp;1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us.&nbsp;What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Naponelli:&nbsp;I'm actually an attorney, having practiced law for about eight years in Chicago relating to tax work and estate planning. After working my way up from a small firm to a couple of huge international firms, I moved here to work for the University of Notre Dame in a fundraising role relating to gifts through estates and charitable trusts.&nbsp;I oversaw the gift planning group at Notre Dame for about five years, and while I was there, I built that group up and hired lots of exceptional people. About a year ago, I decided to make a change. I loved what I was doing, but I hired some really great people that were capable of running the group without me.&nbsp;It was then that I got the itch to build and create something, so I started talking to a career coach who acts as a franchise consultant. She introduced me to a franchise called Fetch Pet Care, which provides in-home pet sitting and dog walking. At the time, I had a diabetic dog, and it was really difficult to find a pet sitter, so I loved this idea.&nbsp;I bought into Fetch and opened that back in October of 2022. However, I wanted to keep looking at other opportunities and franchises.&nbsp;When we launched, I hired Diana as one of my first sitters. Diana has an extensive background in the pet industry and had been training dogs for a few years, so we talked about getting into a training business. We started to ask the consultants about what's out there in terms of dog training franchises, and they showed us Dog Training Elite. Diana loves to do research. She's a phenomenal researcher. So she dug into the different franchises and really, nothing came close to Dog Training Elite, so we decided to take that jump. We went through our training course over the summer and then launched our first territory on the first of August in the Michiana area.&nbsp;Hyepock: I started my first job in the pet industry in 1995. I've done everything from retail store management to grooming. I had my own mobile grooming business for 12 years, and then I worked with Fetch. I've done veterinary, dog daycares and animal massage, volunteered at the zoo and even volunteered on a research project with black rhinos in Kenya.&nbsp;I got my experience in dog training from the start. When I managed Petsmart, I had to know how to do the basic obedience to be able to cover for our trainers if they didn't show up. That was way back in the ‘90s.&nbsp;Fast forward to just before 2020, my daughter had PTSD and anxiety, medications were not working for her. Having worked with service dog trainers before, I decided to get a puppy and go that route. I planned the classes I would offer at work according to what my daughter and I needed, basically putting together my own program for our puppy. However, we bought the puppy just before everything shut down for COVID, and while I knew how to do some basic training, I didn't know how to do a lot of the tasking, so I started doing my own research and realized a lot of the programs out there are not very good.&nbsp;So, I decided to get myself trained. I started with my trick dog certification because tricks can be transferred to a lot of service tasks. I then went to an Animal Behavior Institute and got my Certified Service and Therapy Dog training professional certification.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Naponelli:&nbsp;When I hear the word franchise, I think about McDonald's. I had worked with a couple of families that had <a href="https://1851franchise.com/how-much-does-it-cost-to-buy-a-mcdonalds-franchise-2724654">McDonald's franchises</a> and they loved it. What I didn't know was how many different types of businesses out there offer franchising.&nbsp;Hyepock:&nbsp;I knew they existed but never never thought I would be part of one. I was proud to have started my own business independently, but now I realize that having the support from the brand is really great. Everybody with Dog Training Elite has a passion for what they are doing.&nbsp;&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Naponelli:&nbsp;Diana, because of her background, understood a lot of the methods Dog Training Elite was offering, and she really agreed with them. I've owned dogs for the majority of my life, as well, and Dog Training Elite’s balanced approach made sense to me.&nbsp;Hyepock:&nbsp;When you need a service dog, you might have to wait two to five years and spend tens of thousands of dollars. A lot of people that could really benefit from service dogs cannot afford that. With Dog Training Elite, we can provide hands-on support for owners as we train them to train their dogs. We make it accessible to so many more people.1851:&nbsp;What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Naponelli:&nbsp;What I love about the franchising model is the ability to scale. The biggest thing for me is that I am helping people. For a lot of dog training businesses, they are really small and can’t scale, but this model will allow me to get out there and help more people by scaling quickly.Service and Therapy dogs are incredible, but I also love the benefits of just basic obedience. We had a client through Fetch who thought that he would have to get rid of his dog because he got his dream job and was going to be gone for about 12 hours a day. The dog was ripping the house apart. Diana did some obedience training with the dog and now she is phenomenal.&nbsp;The goal of a business is always to make money, but if you're not passionate about what you're doing and don't want to do some type of good with it, it's just going to be a job even if you own it.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hyepock:&nbsp;Dogs can really change with the right training, and that’s what we want to achieve. I am currently working with an owner who came to me for training as a last result because her dog had bitten multiple people and was facing behavioral euthanasia. It was her baby, and she wanted to try everything she possibly could. Now, we are two months into it, and the process has completely reset his life. The dog just looks happy. Is he ever going to bite anybody again? I don't know; nobody can ever really say that. But does he have a fighting chance and a lot better quality of life right now? Absolutely.1851:&nbsp;What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?Naponelli:&nbsp;I'm relatively young at 42 and have a bit of a winding career. I go after things I'm passionate about, and I want to enjoy what I do day in and day out. Not every day is going to be a good day even if you love what you do, but if you do love what you do and are passionate about it, then you can feel good at the end of the day. Go after what you love to do and do some good in the world, because it could take you to an extraordinarily fun place like playing with dogs all day.Hyepock:&nbsp;I've gotten into this because I want to help people, especially those people that need service and therapy or just a generally better behaved dog. There's so much need out there. Service dogs save lives. Therapy Dogs bring so much joy to people. There is a mental health epidemic going on and dogs can play a huge, helpful part in that.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?Naponelli:&nbsp;Research not only the franchisor but also the franchising concept. What do you want us to know?Pratham Patel:&nbsp;I’m 24 years old and graduated from Georgia Tech in May 2023 with a degree in computer science. Georgia Tech’s CS program is consistently ranked among the best in the country, and it really shaped the way I think — analytically, strategically, and with a long-term mindset. After graduation, I worked a couple of corporate roles in Atlanta before ultimately moving back home to Warner Robins.I come from a very business-oriented family background, primarily in retail — liquor stores, gas stations, and similar ventures — so entrepreneurship has always been around me. This is my first time stepping into the food and beverage industry on my own, and it’s a new challenge I’m excited to take on. Having lived here my entire life, I know the community and the market inside and out, which gives me a strong foundation as I build something here.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Patel:&nbsp;In my first role, I worked on implementing advanced business analytics strategies for a mobile ordering platform widely used in the hospitality industry. After that, I joined Boeing as a systems data analyst supporting the C-17 program here in my hometown. When I experienced a layoff at Boeing, it forced me to take a step back and really think about what I wanted long term. That’s when I realized I’d always wanted to build something of my own — just like my parents did.I knew stepping into business ownership wouldn’t be easy, especially as a first-time operator. Building a concept entirely from scratch is challenging and requires constant innovation. What attracted me to the franchise model was the structure — the framework is already proven, and the concept has been tested. My job is to execute it at a high level. I bring youthful energy and creative thinking to the table, but having that established foundation gave me the confidence to take the leap.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Patel:&nbsp;Before going through this process, I didn’t really understand what franchising actually provides. I had a pretty negative perception — I assumed it was mostly about high royalty fees with limited support in return. They see it as an investment in you as an operator, not just a transaction.When I began this journey, I had no experience negotiating leases, navigating tenant improvement allowances, or running food and hospitality operations. He helped prepare me for every stage of the process, and because of that guidance, I now feel extremely confident handling complex lease negotiations and development decisions. For my location in Warner Robins, I’m investing in a high-tech AV system and a modern lighting package, which no other location has ever done before. I also looked at one of their best-performing locations in California and saw how they utilized their patio and interior design. I’m taking elements from that success to build something new here.&nbsp;Long term, I’m focused on growth. Once we’re fully operational and have achieved great success, I plan to explore opening additional locations across the Southeast, with markets like Charlotte and Miami already on my radar. My goal is to position The Brass Tap as a leading name in the bar and nightlife scene, on par with the biggest players in the region.Looking ahead, I also have a vision of developing rooftop concepts and creating locations connected to sports-driven facilities, including pickleball, to bring together nightlife, community, and active lifestyle experiences under one brand.1851:&nbsp;Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Patel:&nbsp;I don’t view this as just a business investment — I see it as an investment in the community that raised me. She’s survived multiple bouts of cancer and still manages a koi pond and four big rescue dogs. Being her support team is an example of exactly what Griswold is about.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?DuBose:&nbsp;I spent almost 30 years in human resources across a wild range of industries, everything from timber processing and meatpacking to my last role in the "clean and conscious" beauty space.I'd always thought about maybe starting a business of my own, but the moment actually kind of came through volunteering. I went through rookie school to become a volunteer firefighter at age 50. While out on calls, I kept seeing seniors struggling with falls, welfare checks and other situations where they simply needed help. I looked at various service brands, but home care was the only thing that touched me personally.1851: What was your perception of franchising before becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?DuBose:&nbsp;I don’t think a lot of people realize that two out of three businesses they pass on the road are actually franchises. I knew I wanted to build something, but I didn’t necessarily have a unique idea in mind. Franchising offered a proven system I could get behind.Now that I’m in it, I realize how much the new owner perspective matters. During my research, I specifically asked to talk to people who had been in business for less than six months. Hearing about their current pain points, the startup challenges, was much more relevant to me than talking to someone ten years in. I’m a high-energy person, and I’ve realized that while I’m blessed to be on this journey, I have to stay grateful and grounded. I want people to know that I’m not just running a business, I’m one of their neighbors.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?DuBose:&nbsp;You have to believe in something to be able to promote it, otherwise it shows all over your face. Also, do your research on the logistics. I wish I’d had a deeper understanding of the ROBS funding process before I started. Most importantly, find a brand that fits you. I joined the Marine Corps and served in two wars. I spent over 20 years and retired as a major with a master’s degree. It wasn’t easy.After that, I came down to Wilmington, North Carolina, and became a pastor at a small church. We grew that church and built a multi-million-dollar complex. Since I got here, I’ve always been trying to help people.I had a vision for building affordable housing. We built affordable housing for senior citizens using low-income tax credits. We went on to buy and build a couple of multifamily homes and lowered the rent. In trying to buy housing and build affordable housing, I was also looking to start workforce development. I thought I would train people to fix houses and give them jobs.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Campbell:&nbsp;As I started writing up that workforce development program, it was really hard. But one day I saw TruBlue, and I thought, “Wow — this is a business with a purpose.” You can merge service and community, and that’s my sweet spot. I know how to write grants. I know how to serve people. The name of my non-profit is New Hope CDC. I want to help ordinary people excel.I thought I would buy this business for myself and use it for hope.1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?Campbell:&nbsp;TruBlue did a great job of helping us understand that a Silver Tsunami is coming. I’m a Baby Boomer myself, and I know that 65 is just getting in the game nowadays.I’ve ensured that our team learns about senior citizens. As a senior, we sometimes forget that we’re not 21 anymore. People know about the risk of falling, but they still get on ladders.I went to change a light bulb the other day on a step ladder, and when I was coming down, I almost broke my neck. I can afford to have somebody come over and do the maintenance plan. They can come by every quarter. That fall was fitting — I’d never had that happen before.We don’t age in our minds as much as we age in our bodies. It’s just not worth it. Sometimes you can have a fall and get injuries that you never recover from.1851: What does your background bring to the TruBlue model?Campbell:&nbsp;I’m a senior. I’m in real estate. I own personal real estate in five states. I understand the entrepreneur who has to get his house ready for a flip, and I understand providers. We provide a premium service. What’s going to determine how the client feels about the job is how they feel about you. That’s why I teach five-star service. It’s about relationships. If we make good relationships, we can bring in repeat customers.1851: What are your long-term goals with TruBlue?Campbell:&nbsp;I’m writing grants to build houses and getting ready to build 34 units for veterans — permanent housing for chronically homeless veterans. It’s a $10 million project. We’re also starting a all boys school, HOPE Technology Preparatory Academy, a high school for boys 9-14th years. What’s different about this school is it’s culture over curriculum and giving them the chance to belong to a brotherhood. If we don’t give them a place to belong in the school, they will find a place to belong in a gang. With TruBlue, I can have them working for us being exposed to different skills, environments, people, doing work and awakening their perspective to so much more. These young men won’t be in a traditional school with a workforce program; the school is the workforce program and a stabilizing institution in the community as it will host a head start program, daycare center, and learning labs for adults and to get their GED, high school diploma and learn new trades and skills.My goal is to expand with TruBlue into other states. I believe that when I talk to them this time next year, we’re going to outperform most franchisees. I’m an overachiever, that’s what I do. We’re starting out slow but we will excel to lead, it’s just a matter of time.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Campbell:&nbsp;We are a home service ally for people. One call does it all. Our school is creating young men of character, education and leadership for life, and the good part about it is we can employ these young men and help them reach their dreams.
