Bloomberg: Google Quietly Buys U.K. Sound Tech Startup Redux

Redux developed technology that turns phone displays into speakers.

Alphabet Inc., the parent company behind Google, quietly purchased a U.K. startup that’s focused on sound technology. According to Bloomberg, the recently acquired brand—Redux—has developed technology that eliminates the need for small speakers in mobile phones. Instead, it turns phone displays into speakers. That then frees up space for batteries or other smartphone tools.

A spokesperson for Google declined to comment when Bloomberg reached out for details on the deal. It’s unclear when the acquisition took place, but the transfer of shares between the two companies was confirmed on December 13. There’s a lot of potential behind the combination—Google is becoming a bigger player in the smartphone and sound technology industries.
