Pollo Campero*, the Central American chicken franchise with nearly 100 units in the U.S. and another 270 worldwide, has garnered an impressively loyal following and has huge plans for growth in the next four years.

Originating in Guatemala in 1971, the original family recipes still remain in use today. This has helped the Pollo Campero franchise develop a cult-like following for their fried chicken dishes, especially fan favorites like the bone-in fried chicken. The chain also serves empanadas and grilled chicken, as well as salads, rice bowls and sides such as plantains and yuca fries.

The brand has previously seen customers buy the chicken in bulk to bring home to cities that do not yet have access to a franchised location.

“The plane is full of Campero Chicken,” Blas Escarcega, Pollo Campero’s director of franchise development, told Business Insider.

The first U.S. location was established in North Carolina in 2002, with sales hitting $1 million dollars within 22 days of opening. As the brand continues to grow, Pollo Campero fans are likely soon to be able to access to their beloved chicken products a lot nearer to home, as the brand has plans to invest $190 million towards expansion in the U.S. The new expansion plans will accelerate this growth substantially, tripling the number of U.S. locations.
