As members of the baby boomer generation enter their 60s and 70s, the so-called silver tsunami is driving a dramatic spike in demand for senior services. In recent years, a senior transitions franchise called Caring Transitions has emerged as one of the most sought-after brands in this booming segment, thanks largely to its prioritization of care and comfort for its clients.

Caring Transitions was established in 2006 to fulfill a growing need for dedicated relocation services for seniors. The move from one’s home to a care facility can be jarring at best and traumatic at worst, and traditional moving companies do little to ease the burden on seniors and their families. Caring Transitions, however, works closely with families to ensure an easy move and help seniors comfortably ease into their new environment.

“We aren’t a moving company; we are a transition company, and that distinction is critical,” said James Stapleton, the brand’s vice president of franchise development. “When someone has to leave their home and enter a care facility or move in with family who can take care of them, it’s a difficult situation that goes way beyond the discomfort of packing up boxes and moving them from one location to another. We make that situation easier and happier for families.”

Beyond the logistics of relocating a senior, Caring Transitions works closely with families to plan a comfortable transition. That includes strategizing which items to keep, which to sell and which to replace, and how to recreate an environment that feels like home at the new location.

“At the end of the day,” Victoria Erfle, Owner of Caring Transitions in Santa Clarita, said, “it's really rewarding to be there for people and to help them go through these difficult transitions. It’s a really difficult process for them, and hopefully we can make these moments later in their life a bit sweeter.”

With the recent launch of its proprietary online sales platform CTBIDS, Caring Transitions has also become a popular service in the estate sales and auction spaces. More often than not, when seniors relocate, they choose to get rid of some of their belongings. Caring Transitions helps families host estate sales so they can easily and profitably sell those items.

Originally launched as a COVID-era pivot to allow Caring Transitions to continue hosting auctions while social distancing prohibited in-person sales, CTBIDS has rapidly emerged as a superior service offering for the company and its clients.

“By hosting auctions online, we can reach a far wider audience than we do at in-person auctions,” Stapleton said. “That means we can get families a much better price for every item they sell, and it also allows shoppers from around the world access to sales they never would have previously had access to.”

Thanks to CTBIDS and its prioritization of care and comfort, Caring Transitions has carved out a sizable niche in the $832.8 billion senior care market, which is projected to continue growing by 3.9% year over year through 2025. In 2020 the franchise set a goal to reach 400 units by 2025. Just two years later, Caring Transitions is already far outpacing that timeline, preparing to establish its 300th location by 2022.

“The demand we’ve experienced has been incredible, and it continues to grow as we work with more clients,” Stapleton said. “There is such a profound need for our services, but people don’t even realize it because they think their only option is a traditional moving company. When a service ends with a hug, as so many of ours do, word travels fast. People don’t expect the support and partnership we provide, and when they get it, they make sure their friends and family know.”

Start-up costs range from $58,912-$82,712, and franchisees have the opportunity to earn back their $44,900 franchise fee through its Winner’s Circle program by hitting a variety of key benchmarks.
