Chick-fil-A Stops Donating to Christian Charities After Backlash From LGBT Community

The chicken chain, known for closing on Sundays and including Bible verses on its cups, is cutting its ties with many Christian organizations.

Chick-fil-A plans to branch out to new charities that focus on education, world hunger and homelessness and end its long-time partnerships with various Christian charities, according to National Review

The franchise announced that it no longer plans to donate to The Salvation Army, Paul Anderson Youth Home and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, all of which are organizations that are known to oppose same-sex marriage. The Chick-fil-A Foundation has donated millions of dollars to the three charities in previous years, but now the chicken QSR announced it’s going to donate almost $25,000 to a local food bank for each new Chick-fil-A location that opens, National Review said.

“There’s no question we know that, as we go into new markets, we need to be clear about who we are,” said Chick-fil-A President and Chief Operating Officer Tim Tassopoulos in an interview with Bisnow. “There are lots of articles and newscasts about Chick-fil-A, and we thought we needed to be clear about our message.”

The chain has been under fire in the past for its alleged stance on LGBT rights. Back in March, a Chick-fil-A was banned from San Antonio’s airport by the San Antonio City Council after the company donated almost $2 million to “three organizations with a record of anti-LGBTQ discrimination,” according to U.S. News

Many have sounded off on Twitter about their views on this news—while many have stated that they’re in favor of same-sex marriage, they’re bothered by Chick-fil-A “caving in” and changing their views.

“Even though I’m in favor of gay marriage, this cave-in botthers me,” one Twitter user writes.
