An old Japanese proverb maintains it’s better to be the head of a chicken than the rear end of an ox. And if you’re going to be a chicken, you might as well be named Gloria, right? Call it the Burger King twist on an old adage.

The charbroiled fast-food giant is bringing back its ever-popular chicken fries, and what better way to appeal to the Internet contingent than with an absurd marketing campaign featuring a random chicken named, appropriately enough, “Random Gloria”?

“Born and raised at Starlight Ranch in Lake Elsinore, Calif., Gloria is a 3-year-old Rhode Island Red chicken,” Burger King states on an official website dedicated to the fowl. “Ever since she was a little chick, Gloria aspired to take the spotlight. Her friends on the farm adored her for her charisma and wit. And now, she finally has the perfect stage to showcase her talents.”

Instead of simply bringing back chicken fries nationwide, Burger King has decided to take ol’ Gloria on a cross-country trip where she will “choose” whether to bring back the item at specific restaurants for the day.

People can tune in live at www.chickenfries.com to get a glimpse of Gloria and her decisions.

While completely insane sounding on its surface, this ad blitz from Burger King actually has a method to its madness. First, limited time offers are the bread and butter of the fast-food world, and nothing is as limited as a one-day return of chicken fries. Secondly, the fact that a fowl is deciding whether to bring the product back for the day (the implications of a chicken deciding whether or not to let people eat her brothers and sisters is dark and twisted enough for a completely different article) adds a certain level of ludicrousness to the proceedings that’s sure to pique consumer interest.

No matter how you feel about the campaign, it’s got people talking. Subservient Chicken would be proud.
