Pizza or Asian. Those were generally the two options consumers would go with if they wanted to order delivery. But over the last few years, restaurant operators have heard the outcry from consumers and are offering more options. A report from global market research firm The NPD Group, as reported by Nation’s Restaurant News, found that alternative delivery options beyond pizza and Asian is still a small portion of delivery traffic, but that it is gaining in popularity.

The NPD Group research showed delivery traffic outside of pizza is up 33 percent in 2015 from 2012. Pizza delivery on the other hand is down three percent. With GrubHub's meteoric rise and more delivery services such as UberEATS becoming available, consumers have more means of ordering different types of food for delivery.

“Consumers want to have the eat-out experience, but are saving money by eating in,” said NPD analyst Bonnie Riggs. “All they had was pizza and Asian. Now they have other options available.”

As consumers increasingly order more delivery from a variety of establishments, one restaurant category in particular that is rocketing in popularity is sandwiches. NPD Group research found sandwich's share of delivery traffic grew to ten percent in 2015, up from eight percent in 2009. What this growth indicates is there is a great opportunity for restaurants and franchisees to capitalize on delivery's surge in popularity to drive bottom line growth.
