Digital Ordering Will Triple by 2020: Report

Data indicates that this trend isn’t going away any time soon.

A report from the market research company NPD Group indicates that restaurant digital orders will triple by the end of 2020, according to a Fast Casual report.

The “Delivering Digital Convenience” report found that 70 percent of a restaurant’s digital orders came either through the restaurant’s website or app while the rest came through third-party websites or apps, according to the article.

"Digital orders will remain an outsized source of growth for the restaurant industry over the next few years, and operators who desire to grow need to embrace a digital strategy," NPD food industry adviser David Portalatin said in a statement, according to the article.

It’s no secret that major brands are making moves to boost their digital efforts. In November, Wingstop CEO Charlie Morrison told CNBC that the brand would focus on expanding its digital efforts. In December, Pizza Hut announced its acquisition of the tech company QuikOrder to improve its online ordering services.
