Dunkin’ Donuts, in conjunction with the Humane Society of the United States, announced on Dec. 7th plans to use only cage free eggs by 2025, making it the latest restaurant company to reveal plans to move away from eggs sourced from cage-confined chickens.

The transition to using cage free eggs is not new for the franchising and fast food world. McDonalds, Taco Bell and General Mills have also announced their intentions to transition to new egg sources. Christine Riley Miller, senior director of corporate responsibility of Dunkin’ Brands, said in a release that the brand is excited to continue its efforts to use only sustainable sourcing and working with the Humane Society of the United States.

“We have a responsibility to ensure the humane treatment of animals, an issue we know is also important to both our franchisee community and our loyal guests,” Miller said.

The Humane Society of the United States estimates the cage-free switch will affect roughly 1.4 million egg-laying hens. The Senior Food Policy Director of the Humane Society of the United States Josh Balk said they will continue to work with Dunkin’ Brands in order to achieve the cage-free optimization.

“We’re pleased to see Dunkin’ Donuts exhibiting dedication to improving the lives of farm animals, and we applaud its decision to switch to exclusively using cage-free eggs,” Balk said. “We look forward to continuing to work with the brand to achieve our mutual animal welfare goals.”
