OhDEER is an industry leader in providing 100% all-natural deer, tick and mosquito control services. The brand provides services such as deer repellent, and tick and mosquito control for commercial and residential properties as well as special events. OhDEER utilizes safe and effective treatments that are not harmful to the environment, children or pets.

Headquartered in Wayland, Massachusetts, the brand was officially established in 2007 by founder Kurt Upham. As a child, Upham loved learning as much about insects and wildlife as he possibly could. He received a degree in horticulture and studied entomology, and came up with the idea for ohDEER while working with the landscape design and architect company The MacDowell Company. The brand went on to begin offering franchise opportunities in 2013.

How Many ohDEER Locations Are There?

As of September 2023, there are 14 ohDEER franchises spanning Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Virginia and Rhode Island. The brand is actively offering new franchise opportunities throughout the Eastern Seaboard and across the country. According to ohDEER’s consumer-facing website, the brand is interested in working with both single- and multi-unit operators.

What Is ohDEER’s Business Model?

OhDEER’s business model revolves around providing deer, tick and mosquito services to residential and commercial properties year-round. The brand generates revenue through service fees and recurring services. According to the brand, ohDEER franchisees retain 92% of their customers. Franchise owners also have exclusive access to their own territory, which includes a minimum of 75K households, providing them with the potential to scale their business.

David Mulcahy, the chief operating officer at ohDEER, confirmed that the brand is expecting to expand exponentially in the next few years alongside the growing demand for tick and mosquito control services. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that each year, nearly half a million people will be diagnosed and treated for a tickborne disease. As roughly 30% of consumers are looking for natural solutions, ohDEER is experiencing significant growth.

Additionally, interested candidates are not required to have prior experience. In fact, ohDEER provides a weeklong initial training program that will teach owners and operators everything they’ll need to know to run their franchise. This training covers sales, marketing, production and administrative tasks taught through hands-on experiences in the classroom and in the field.
