White Rabbit Cannabis is one of Washington state’s oldest legal retail operators that serves both the medical and recreational marijuana markets. The dispensary sells products such as marijuana flower, concentrate, cartridges, pre-rolls, edibles and handcrafted paraphernalia.

The White Rabbit brand was founded in 2013 by Craig Kimball, Teresa Chilelli-White and Bruce White, who opened their very first location in Lynnwood, Washington in July 2015. The brand’s name was inspired by Teresa’s love of “Alice in Wonderland” and the couple’s last name: White.

According to the brand’s website, White Rabbit was one of the very first retail cannabis stores to open for business after Washington became the first state to approve legal recreational cannabis. As of Q1 2021, the brand has officially begun offering franchise opportunities throughout the country.

How Many White Rabbit Franchise Locations Are There?

As of September 2023, there is one White Rabbit franchise in operation and more in development.

What Is White Rabbit’s Business Model?

White Rabbit’s business model revolves around providing medical and recreational marijuana to customers. The brand, which is a new and emerging franchise, operates in a recession-proof industry that is seeing massive growth as a number of states continue to approve the sale of legal marijuana.

White Rabbit does not require its owners to have previous retail cannabis experience. Instead, the brand provides all the necessary training to get its operators up and running. This training is designed to cover every aspect of the business and touches on factors such as products, procedures and safety. Additionally, because White Rabbit sells medical marijuana, all of the brand’s “budtenders” are certified and required to complete a specialized course mandated and monitored by the State Liquor and Cannabis Control Board.

The most difficult part of operating a White Rabbit franchise, according to Farrell Timlake, the brand’s vice president of marketing, is getting through a state’s licensing process. Timlake says this can be very time-consuming and requires patience because each state has different rules and regulations. However, as long as an owner can secure a license to sell medical or recreational marijuana or just cannabidiol (CBD), then they can be eligible to open a White Rabbit dispensary. Additionally, Timlake says White Rabbit will “greatly assist” its prospective franchisees throughout the process of potentially obtaining a license.

The brand lists the following benefits to operating a White Rabbit franchise:

  • Marketing strategies that take advantage of available channels in a highly restricted and regulated environment
  • Product knowledge and insights into consumer behavior to make highly targeted and informed stocking decisions
  • Services to maintain traceability and reporting, manage customers, and drive advertising
  • Years of expertise in both medical and recreational cannabis, as well as CBD products

How Much Can White Rabbit Franchise Owners Make?

How Much Does It Cost to Open a White Rabbit Franchise?

White Rabbit does not list its initial investment information on its consumer-facing website. However, according to Entrepreneur magazine, the cost to open a White Rabbit ranges between $196,000 to $390,500, including a $35,000 franchise fee. Additionally, Franchise Consulting Co. and America’s Best Franchises report White Rabbit’s investment to be between $150K to $500K, including a $50K franchise fee.

White Rabbit will not collect any franchise fees from a prospective owner until they secure their license to operate.
