From Tech to Owner: Scoop Soldiers Franchisee Buys Territories He Worked in after Four Years

Sean Rains began working at Scoop Soldiers of Oklahoma City in 2019, developing a deep love for the franchise, and will now take over the business early next year.

Sean Rains, a lifelong Oklahoma City resident, is set to take over three Scoop Soldiers territories in January of 2024. After years spent working in general labor/service based jobs, Rains found his way to Scoop Soldiers, the 40-plus-unit pet waste removal franchise, promising his manager at the time that he would be the best hire he ever made.

After working for the Scoop Soldiers Oklahoma city market for about two years, Rains was promoted from tech to market leader, he began to see a path beyond a technician role with the brand. A couple of years later, when he found out about the franchise opportunity, he knew that this was his opportunity to take over a brand (and client list) he had a deep love for and carry on the legacy in the community.

1851 Franchise spoke with Rains about his journey into franchising and his plans for the future.

1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?

Rains: I’ve always done outdoor work, so I’ve always been in a kind of labor-intensive outside job. I’ve worked around animals before, too. When I found this job about four years ago, I really tried my best to get it. I told the manager at the time that I’d be the best hire he ever made. I started as a technician in 2019, but I never thought I’d take over. The plan was just to see how far I could go with this job. I had always thought about owning my own business, so when the franchise opportunity came along, my first thought was, “If I could have the opportunity, why not take it?”

1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?

Rains: The benefits of a franchise, rather than starting my own business, are great. I enjoy having everything set in stone for me. The policies, procedures and operations are already established. That made this a lot easier because I already have a lot of support from the company itself.

1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?

Rains: I’ve never had a job or worked for a company that has shown as much appreciation for its employees as Scoop Soldiers has. That’s what has kept me here for so long. I like how we do things; I like the operations side. I like everything about the company, so it was a no-brainer for me.

1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?

Rains: My goal is to make Scoop Soldiers the go-to for pet waste removal in and around the Oklahoma City metro.

1851: What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?

Rains: I love what I do, I love dogs and I love helping people.

1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?

Rains: Look into it, see if it is something that might interest you, and if so, go for it.
