Subway may be doing away with the famous $5 footlong promotion. According to a recent article in CNBC, the brand will now allow franchisees to decide whether or not to include the offering at their location. This decision comes as a result of franchisee push-back that the deal hurt profits when it was reintroduced.

"How do we help our franchises with more of a regional value message, so they're able to (have) a value proposition that fits with their economic model. If you look at California, there's a very different cost of business than in Arkansas," said Trevor Haynes.

This will not be the only change for Subway. The brand is also testing new menu options including a a spicier rotisserie-type chicken and guajillo steak. Subway is also testing out paninis at select California locations.
