After graduating from college and working in the pharmaceutical industry for several years,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/spenceturn/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=main-squeeze-juice-co-owner-opens-second-location-in-two-years-2722398" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Spencer Turner</a> wanted to make a change in his life. After deciding to go down the franchising route, he was looking for a brand that would bring something different to Jacksonville. While browsing a franchise magazine, he discovered&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mainsqueezefranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=main-squeeze-juice-co-owner-opens-second-location-in-two-years-2722398" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Main Squeeze Juice Co.</a> and fell in love with the brand’s unique menu, proprietary technology and welcoming environment.&nbsp;Around two years ago, Turner opened his first Main Squeeze Juice Co. location. Seeing what a difference he has been able to make in the lives of his community, the 27-year-old is excited to bring the brand’s delicious, healthy products to even more people in Jacksonville.&nbsp;1851 Franchise spoke to Turner about his franchising journey with Main Squeeze Juice Co.&nbsp;1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us.&nbsp;What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Spencer Turner:&nbsp;I'm only 27, so I’m not too far out of college. Before this, I was working for a company where we manufactured pharmaceutical facilities. It was a great job, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted to do with my life. My family and I have some friends who have been in the franchising world for a long time, and I've always been interested in that. We reached out to them to get some guidance on how this whole thing works. Then we went shopping around and looked for brands that were a little bit smaller, newer and on the cutting edge of a market — like health food. I found Main Squeeze in the back of a franchising magazine that somebody gave me. I reached out and Main Squeeze called me back in about three minutes and said they would love to be in Jacksonville. They didn't have any stores in Florida, so it would be a good start. It took about a year and a half, almost two years, before even signing the paperwork. It was a very long process, but it was very fun. And I’m so glad we did it.&nbsp;1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Turner: I kind of knew the basics. I knew that a franchise basically wrote the menu for you. They give you everything you need and you pay them a certain percentage. But I didn’t realize how much it can vary from place to place. Some of them need you to be very hands on, like Main Squeeze. But I liked the idea of it. It was different from what I was used to, which was sitting behind a desk.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Turner:&nbsp;I was looking for a brand in a less saturated market. There’s plenty of pizza, burger and taco places, but something that’s healthy and that tastes good is hard to come by — especially in the quick service area. When we reached out to Main Squeeze, we also reached out to some of their direct competitors. And I was not as impressed with the other brands. A lot of brands wanted me to sign without knowing anything about me. Main Squeeze, on the other hand, is picky with their franchisees and got to know me.&nbsp;I really like how we are able to offer a good product for a good price, and I'm able to actually take pride in serving it. I also like knowing it helps people. When somebody comes into my store, they could be having some problem that could have, and I can help them feel a little bit better when they leave. And I like the fact that it tastes good.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Turner:&nbsp;We have 10 licenses for Jacksonville. We're only opening our second store at this point, and we've had the first one open for almost a year and a half, two years. What I'd like to achieve is to have all 10 stores open in this area, not necessarily just in Jacksonville but in the surrounding counties and bring healthier food at a fast pace and good price to the community.&nbsp; North Florida has been missing a place like that. I'd like to really try to bring that to the masses.&nbsp;Our plan is to open all ten, probably within the next decade or so, within the same area and build a good management team. I like to hire and promote from within.1851:&nbsp;What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?Turner:&nbsp;I want people to understand that, even though franchising can be a big business, the owner takes pride in owning and operating and all the tiny little details that go into making one of these things work. We are in there and doing it. I know there are some owners that don't; some of us live in different states from our stores. But I want people to understand that, since it's my store, I'm gonna be there, and if you ever had a problem or if I could help out in some way as the owner, I'd do it.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?Turner: I'd say really do a lot of due diligence and a lot of research before you pull the trigger because it's a big decision. If you find a space that you want to be in, talk to every single competitor in the space. Really get to know where you want to put a place and know the clientele that's there. Preferably make it a place that you would want to go to yourself. Especially for the first one, I would try to put it somewhere that's close to you so you can help with management. The learning curve is incredibly high. It doesn't matter your level of business expertise because you're learning a lot right off the bat.&nbsp;Hire good staff and never ask them to do anything that you wouldn't do yourself. That's probably one of my biggest pieces of advice, especially now with hiring good staff and keeping staff.&nbsp;

Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Keaney:&nbsp;I looked at a whole bunch of different franchises and industries. The two finalists were TruBlue and kids' sports. You only have to look at my credit card bill to see what a big industry kids' sports is — I've got two kids obsessed with them. A lot of the things that we go out and do are stuff that I would just do around the house myself. Now that I'm married, have kids, lead Cub Scouts, coach sports teams, and everything else, I just don't have as much time as I used to. I’ve heard some horror stories about other franchises, and every time I say to myself, “That hasn’t been my experience at all.”&nbsp;1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. I thought I would train people to fix houses and give them jobs.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Campbell:&nbsp;As I started writing up that workforce development program, it was really hard. But one day I saw TruBlue, and I thought, “Wow — this is a business with a purpose.” You can merge service and community, and that’s my sweet spot. What are your plans for growth?Campbell:&nbsp;TruBlue did a great job of helping us understand that a Silver Tsunami is coming. I’m a Baby Boomer myself, and I know that 65 is just getting in the game nowadays.I’ve ensured that our team learns about senior citizens. As a senior, we sometimes forget that we’re not 21 anymore. People know about the risk of falling, but they still get on ladders.I went to change a light bulb the other day on a step ladder, and when I was coming down, I almost broke my neck. I can afford to have somebody come over and do the maintenance plan. They can come by every quarter. That fall was fitting — I’d never had that happen before.We don’t age in our minds as much as we age in our bodies. It’s just not worth it. Sometimes you can have a fall and get injuries that you never recover from.1851: What does your background bring to the TruBlue model?Campbell:&nbsp;I’m a senior. I’m in real estate. I own personal real estate in five states. I understand the entrepreneur who has to get his house ready for a flip, and I understand providers. We provide a premium service. What’s going to determine how the client feels about the job is how they feel about you. That’s why I teach five-star service. It’s about relationships. If we make good relationships, we can bring in repeat customers.1851: What are your long-term goals with TruBlue?Campbell:&nbsp;I’m writing grants to build houses and getting ready to build 34 units for veterans — permanent housing for chronically homeless veterans. It’s a $10 million project. We’re also starting a all boys school, HOPE Technology Preparatory Academy, a high school for boys 9-14th years. What’s different about this school is it’s culture over curriculum and giving them the chance to belong to a brotherhood. If we don’t give them a place to belong in the school, they will find a place to belong in a gang. With TruBlue, I can have them working for us being exposed to different skills, environments, people, doing work and awakening their perspective to so much more. These young men won’t be in a traditional school with a workforce program; the school is the workforce program and a stabilizing institution in the community as it will host a head start program, daycare center, and learning labs for adults and to get their GED, high school diploma and learn new trades and skills.My goal is to expand with TruBlue into other states. I believe that when I talk to them this time next year, we’re going to outperform most franchisees. I’m an overachiever, that’s what I do. We’re starting out slow but we will excel to lead, it’s just a matter of time.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Campbell:&nbsp;We are a home service ally for people. One call does it all. Our school is creating young men of character, education and leadership for life, and the good part about it is we can employ these young men and help them reach their dreams. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Sandeep KesiReddy:&nbsp;My business partner Sid and I go back a long, long time. We have known each other for 15 plus years.We went to college together and always had this thing about opening a business together. Then, our paths diverged for a while; I went into entrepreneurship, running a startup in the Bay Area, and Sid became a head of operations for a global company on the West Coast. We were scouting for what we could do, and then came Paris Baguette. They just lined up so well for us as a rising brand that resonates with the current generation.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?KesiReddy: I run a startup in the Bay Area and Sid manages operations for a global company. We realized Paris Baguette vibes very well with our synergies. They are an “ops-ish” restaurant rather than “ops-heavy.” You bake in the morning and sell in the afternoon, so it boils down more to a numbers and strategy problem rather than a time-efficiency problem that most restaurants have. That made it much more comfortable for us to jump into.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?KesiReddy:&nbsp;Before entering this, we were not keen on looking at franchising or the food business at all. Typically, our perception was that franchising involved a lot of red tape and processes that take away freedom from the owner to add their own flavor. Now, I want people to know that franchising can be very attractive if you find a brand that plays to your strengths. Seldom do you find a concept that has processes that actually empower you, help you run it right, and push towards higher revenues and profit margins. Paris Baguette has a unique combination of making the kitchen and the front of the store run as two independent operations, taking away most of the complexity of a restaurant.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?KesiReddy:&nbsp;They were not one of those old-school brands stuck with lots of processes; they were flexible and quick in responding. What excites me most is the branding and the presence the brand has with Gen Z and millennials. Also, the flexibility the team had to understand our unique location was nice to have. I could just text my construction manager and have her fly in to help us out; I don’t see that happening often with other franchise brands.1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?KesiReddy:&nbsp;We want it to be one of the top-performing stores. Our goal is to make Bellevue a top-quartile store for Paris Baguette. We are already looking at expansion in the next fiscal year. You’ll see another store open in the Bothell/Woodinville region, and there is more to come.&nbsp;1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?KesiReddy:&nbsp;Having a brand that has an appetite to grow is very important when you have similar ambitions. Most brands look at their franchisees through a single lens, but there are a thousand variables that make every location unique.
