Modern Market Eatery, the fast-casual restaurant with a chef-inspired menu, offers a unique model for existing multi-unit franchisees to expand. Because of the brand’s incredible drive-thru-menu engineering, Modern Market Eatery has brought food and labor costs below 50% on average. The brand has also designed a model that can operate in under 2,700 sq.ft., which reduces real estate costs without compromising the guest experience. With a tight focus on unit economics and clean ingredients, Modern Market has established itself as a brand that multi-unit owners are looking at as they seek to expand their fast-casual portfolio and tap into shifting customer demand.

“We’re in a category that speaks to what a lot of guests are seeking when they go out, and that's ‘better for you’ fast-casual. We believe that you’ll feel better about the choice to eat out and better physically when you eat at Modern Market Eatery,” said Chris Cheek, chief development officer. “We have a clean-label ingredient list — no preservatives or additives in any of our products — and we span the four major categories: bowls, salads, sandwiches and pizzas.”

Modern Market Eatery delivers an elevated guest experience, but this does not come at the expense of the owner or teams. The model does not require a chef in the kitchen, and the culinary experience can be delivered in three to four minutes.

“We don’t believe that anyone is delivering this level of culinary experience that fast,” said Cheek. “When you combine that with the fact that we opened our first drive-thru location last year, the quality and efficiency of Modern Market Eatery is even more impressive.”

Modern Market Eatery is a great addition to a multi-unit franchisee’s investment portfolio because these types of operators can appreciate and properly execute the business model — a crucial trait as Modern Market Eatery works to expand.

“We look for multi-unit franchisees that have an appreciation for operational excellence,” said Cheek. “We have a lot of very good systems that allow us to deliver culinary-driven, craveable food in a fast-casual environment. There are a range of quick-service, full-service and non-competitive fast-casual brands that position franchisees to be a good fit for us.”

Cheek explained that, though Modern Market Eatery’s processes are not complicated, they are certainly different from something like a sandwich model that simply requires the assembly of pre-sliced breads, meats and cheeses. Franchisees who have experience with multi-unit restaurant concepts have proven their ability to follow processes and leverage operational blueprints, and will be set up for success with Modern Market Eatery’s processes.

Because the brand is still growing, there are plenty of territories available. Modern Market Eatery is open to exploring franchise partnerships across the country.

As part of this expansion plan, Cheek will be attending the 2024 Multi-Unit Franchising Conference (MUFC) in Las Vegas; he will be available March 20th and 21st to connect with interested franchisees and further discuss the Modern Market Eatery opportunity.

“We’re really looking for franchisees who have multi-unit experience and hospitality DNA,” said Cheek. “We’re looking for the best franchisees, and we know they come in all shapes, sizes and geographies. These are the kinds of franchisees that will be at MUFC, and after we find them, we can then build territories around them to compensate for their goals, whether they want to commit to three, five or 10 units.”
