Officially, MOOYAH is a “better burger” concept, but that categorization doesn’t do the brand justice. MOOYAH has created the best burger, the type you might find at a fine-dining restaurant, if those establishments allowed Guests to fully customize their burgers with a nearly endless combination of options. And unlike the stuffy, expensive restaurants people often associate with elevated burgers, MOOYAH provides a fun, accessible, family-friendly environment where Guests can relax and enjoy themselves.

MOOYAH believes in being the best at what it does — providing the best burger, the best environment and the best franchise opportunity for Franchise Owners. That last part is where it gets really exciting. MOOYAH has refined its operational model to ensure Franchise Owner success, starting with a low-cost buildout that lets Franchise Owners get up and running for a fraction of the cost of competing franchises. From there, MOOYAH offers Franchise Owners ongoing, dedicated, personalized support in every aspect of the business, from real estate selection to marketing to technology to profit-and-loss guidance. All of that means a better-running business, a faster return on investment and a brighter, more profitable future for Franchise Owners.

The numbers:

  • $3.5 million — the average investment costs at certain high-price-tag burger competitors.

  • $495,918 - $1,168,251 — the total investment cost to open a MOOYAH.

  • $1,428,826* — MOOYAH’s average unit sales among the top quartile.

*Per Item 19 of 2023 Financial Disclosure Document

MOOYAH is growing, and growing fast. In 2020, the franchise established eight new units in markets across the country, including the franchise’s biggest location yet in Orlando. As the brand’s footprint continues to grow, the industry is taking notice. In 2020, Franchise Times included MOOYAH in its Top Franchises of the Year list. MOOYAH is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after brands in franchising, but for ambitious Franchise Owners, MOOYAH still offers plenty of room for growth. The franchise has a range of available territories all across the country, many of which are primed to support multiple units. Today, MOOYAH offers prospective Franchise Owners the rare opportunity to partner with a franchise that has widespread brand recognition and Guest loyalty while still maintaining substantial room for growth.

Leadership Expertise: 150 years of combined restaurant experience. Two seasoned Franchise Owners at the helm. One extraordinary Executive Support Team.

Elite Support: Our only focus is our Franchise Owners’ success. We support you like family, because… you are!

Community Involvement: Where other burger franchises just sort of exist within cities, MOOYAH makes it a point to become involved within the communities we serve.

Low Risk/High Reward: We keep build-out costs low without restricting our ability to create beautiful, high-quality restaurants bursting with fun and personality.

Seriously Fun: Making seriously good food doesn’t have to be such serious business. MOOYAH is committed to prioritizing FUN for our Franchise Owners, staff, and Guests.

The hamburger has been a staple of American dining for a century, and that’s not changing anytime soon. Americans love burgers — we eat approximately 50 billion of them every year. Sixty-eight percent of those burgers are eaten by millennials, who make up the largest demographic of consumers and are at the height of their spending power.

Seventy-nine percent of consumers prefer grass-fed over conventional beef, and 82% said they'd pay more for premium ingredients. And all beef is not created equally; three out of five consumers want to know where their beef came from.

So how does that translate to sales? Each year, Americans spend $205.36 billion on sandwiches, and nearly half of those sales — a whopping $90.57 billion — were spent on burgers, making up 44% of total sandwich sales. No wonder the burger category remains, year after year, one of the biggest segments in franchising.

Because you’re a people person. MOOYAH owners are dedicated to providing the best possible experience for Guests and creating an environment where people feel at home. They are pillars of their communities and take pride in the positive role they play in their neighborhoods.

Because you’ve got strong business acumen. You know a good opportunity when you see one, and you know how to make the most of it. Whether in the corporate world or through prior ownership experience, you know how to manage a budget, maintain a P&L and manage inventory and costs. And crucially, you want to grow. MOOYAH owners are multi-unit minded and eager to grow with the brand as it opens new locations in markets across the country.

Because you want to enjoy your work. MOOYAH owners believe that in order for Guests to have fun, the business itself has to be fun. That means having a genuine passion for MOOYAH’s food, experience and commitment to friendly service. Having a burger and a shake every now and then doesn’t hurt either.

Because you are a leader. You’ve got the skills to motivate, engage and manage a team. Successful MOOYAH owners come from a variety of leadership backgrounds, including business, military careers and sports.

Because you are a problem-solver. You think quickly and react effectively to whatever is thrown your way. You are dedicated to clearing any hurdle to ensure every Guest has a positive experience.

Executive Q&A with MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes

Executive Q&A with MOOYAH Brand President Doug Willmarth

Willmarth, who was promoted to president of MOOYAH in December after over four years of serving as chief brand officer, explains why the burger franchise beats out the competition.

1851 Franchise: Tell us a little about the history of MOOYAH.

Doug Willmarth: MOOYAH was started about 15 years ago by a serial restaurateur named Rich Hicks who went to try Five Guys in North Carolina and loved the idea but saw room for improvement and thought he could do better. So, he came back to Dallas and started MOOYAH, which is a burger company with the best ingredients, that you can customize the way you want. We have all these different buns, toppings and patty options, and you can build your own. That balance of quality and customization has driven the concept since the beginning and continues to be super important to us. Rich grew the company and sold it in 2017 to the current owners. They have always had the goal of really emphasizing growth for MOOYAH, and now we are scaling quickly.

1851: What void does MOOYAH fill in the marketplace?

Willmarth: We are committed to offering the best tasting cheeseburger in the world. That’s the vision. If we are in any given town and stop someone on the street and ask where you can get the best burger in town, they will tell you MOOYAH. We get there through a combination of three things. We start with the best ingredients available: super high quality angus beef, real cheese, fresh baked buns, daily cut vegetables. We hand craft every meal; there are no frozen burgers and no conveyor belt. We are hand cutting fries to order. We season and hand smash the meat.  And our food is made exactly the way you want it. Our customization options are a pillar, where we allow you to decide exactly what you want.

1851: Why is now the time to join MOOYAH?

Willmarth:  I think Americans right now are in a space where they are really starting to understand, especially the younger generation, that what you eat, the quality of ingredients and how it's prepared matters. One of our differentiators is that because of the custom creation options, we have gluten-free and keto choices and options for virtually everyone.

And burgers are America's favorite food. The category is number one in food service, but we occupy a specific place in the burger category. We want to have the best-tasting, most quality spot that gives franchise owners world-class support to take the brand to the next level. And our financial model is getting better every year, especially with the addition of the drive-throughs, so the return franchisees see is attractive.

1851: What are some milestones and successes you’ve recently had at MOOYAH?

Wilmarth: We have made some great additions to our executive team. We are really investing in the quality of the brand and product and dialing up support for franchise owners. MOOYAH is really excited about moving the brand towards additional convenience, with more/better online ordering, drive through prototypes and pickup windows.

We are also being very intentional, targeted and specific in our development. We have focused on a couple key areas where we want to grow, and we are aggressively building those areas out and have prime parcels available. At this moment in time, we are just opening up Phoenix, Houston and San Antonio, which are premium markets with first-tier spots.

1851: What are MOOYAH’s current growth goals?

Willmarth: In the last five years, we grew to about 94 locations, and then have stayed at that number for a while. With the new owners, we have invested in growing to an additional 20 locations over the next 12 months, and in the following years, we’ll add another 30 locations. So, we have significantly increased growth goals and we will get there by focusing on specific geographies and actively recruiting a certain type of franchisee.

1851: What Does MOOYAH look for in its ideal franchisee?

Willmarth: First and foremost, we want restaurateurs and people who understand the restaurant business. We are looking for people with a passion for the business; maybe someone who already operates restaurants and is looking to diversify or grow their business.

The investment range to open a MOOYAH is $551,918 to $715,161. Learn more about franchising with MOOYAH at https://franchise.mooyah.com/.
