Mosquito Joe franchise spotlighted by Kiplinger

After getting married in November 2012, Kurt and Melissa Godwin wanted to shift the trajectory of their personal and professional lives while having the option to spend more time together.

In order to allot themselves the freedom of business ownership, they signed on with Mosquito Joe* - a mosquito control treatment service - to develop the brand in Columbia and Howard County, Maryland. Prior to joining Mosquito Joe, Kurt was a commercial pilot who began his sky-high career flying for the Washington Redskins and US Airways at the age of 21. He currently flies privately for families in Washington D.C.

Alternatively, for the past 25 years, Melissa was employed as a worker’s compensation claims manager for the state of Pennsylvania. After getting married, Kurt and Melissa tried finding ways to consolidate their time and find a business where they could work together. Kurt is the president and Melissa is the director of operations for their Mosquito Joe location. They signed a multi-unit deal to open four additional locations in the next two years in the Baltimore area.

Each location will provide about six technician jobs, with a total of 30 in the next two years. Their ultimate goal is to provide a service to the community and build not only a life together, but a business as well.

"Corporate offered a Discovery Day, so we went to the headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia and spent time with everyone to learn more about the brand. CEO Kevin Wilson has a lot of experience and a strong background in franchising, which put us at ease. Angela, the marketing manager, is fantastic at what she does and seeing how well-developed the corporate side of Mosquito Joe was helped us make our decision," said Kevin. "They were confident, they were well managed, and they were lighthearted yet professional."
