While Saif Khan knows what it takes to create a profitable business, having previously owned multiple businesses in India, what he is most concerned about is creating a welcoming environment and spreading love to the community. With Teriyaki Madness, the fast casual teriyaki shop concept with over 125 shops, he believes he has found the perfect franchise to spread good vibes to his Chicago community, while also providing delicious food and creating a successful business for himself.

Saif Khan moved to the U.S. from India in 2009 for his wife’s medical residency in Chicago, with a few young children in tow. He left behind several businesses, two of which he ran with his brother-in-law and father: a hatchery business and a Yamaha dealership. Upon arriving in the U.S., Khan kept his eyes peeled for his next business venture. However, busy with young children and family, it wasn’t until several years later that he found the perfect opportunity with Teriyaki Madness.

When he stumbled upon the franchise concept, he was immediately interested and drove to the nearest location to further investigate. He loved the food and appreciated the quality ingredients that were used in each dish. Reaching out to the corporate team, he was sold when he encountered nothing but positive attitudes and support. Now, he looks forward to providing his community with a place for great food and connection.

“I want to provide my community with good food and an opportunity to build strong relationships with one another as I spread some love with my business,” said Khan.

1851 Franchise spoke with Khan about his journey into franchising and his plans for the future.

PROFILE QUESTIONS

1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?

Khan: I am a businessman, having received a masters in business administration and owned several businesses, all of which were in India. My father, brother-in-law and I are in the hatchery business, where we produce chicken. We also have a franchise dealership with Yamaha motorcycles in India.

My wife is a doctor, and it was because she was assigned her residency here that we moved as a family to the U.S. from India in 2009. I was looking to start a business in the U.S. from the moment we arrived, but I was busy taking care of our young children for a while. When I came across Teriyaki Madness, I was immediately interested in the opportunity.

1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?

Khan: Franchising offers a great concept that comes fully equipped with support and positive attitudes. It allows you to know all about the performance and growth of the company before you invest.

1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?

Khan: Teriyaki Madness has so many opportunities for franchisees. The business concept is simple and the model is convenient for customers. They offer dine-in and carry out options, which is really popular, as many people just stop in and take their food with them. I really love the food, as well. It is great quality and tasty.

I think this market has the potential for a lot of growth, which was compelling to me, but more than anything, I am excited to serve the people in my community in Chicago great food and build relationships with my customers.

1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?

Khan: I hope to achieve growth and profit while maintaining a positive attitude. I want to provide my community with good food and an opportunity to build strong relationships with one another and spread some love with my business.

1851: What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?

Khan: I am a simple person with a soft spoken nature, and I really enjoy helping people and serving my community.

1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?

Khan: Franchising provides new business owners with a very good opportunity. Teriyaki Madness has a lot of growth potential because it is new and selling to a lot of franchisees currently. It really is a great organization, and I am looking forward to getting started.
