1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?

Tran: I am a doctor, and I own my own practice. I’ve always been an entrepreneur, but I’ve always wanted to do something outside of medicine as well. When I found TMAD, I knew it was the right choice for me. 

1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?

Tran: In the restaurant business, it is very difficult to run a mom-and-pop location due to high costs these days. I wanted to sign up with a franchise because I was looking for continued support. 

1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?

Tran: I was searching on Google for restaurant franchises, and Teriyaki Madness popped up. I started browsing their website and I thought the opportunity looked very interesting. I contacted the team and they recommended I head over to the nearest location, in Scottsdale, Arizona, to try their food. Right away, I loved it. That is how it all started. 

After trying the food, I thought the concept would fit well in the Albuquerque, New Mexico market. I like that the menu is made fresh everyday, and there really isn’t anything like TMAD in Albuquerque.

1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth? 

Tran: I want to create a dining place where people can come, sit down and enjoy food they love. This isn’t the type of restaurant where you have to feel bad for eating — the food is healthy and affordable. This is something new in the area, and I am very excited to get started. Down the road, I would love to open more locations.

1851: What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?

Tran: I am a Bohemian. I love food, and I love to travel. Those things all really go hand-in-hand for me. I love trying different ethnic food during my travels, which is why I am so excited to bring a new restaurant and concept to town. 

1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?

Tran: Be sure you have a lot of money saved up as unexpected costs will always come up. Also, be sure you really want it and are committed to the business. Challenges may come up so you should be passionate and willing to put in the hard work to overcome them.
