NRN: Strawless Lids Coming to Starbucks Beverages

The announcement comes as on the heels of Seattle’s ban on plastic straws

Last week, Seattle rolled out a city-wide ban on plastic straws, requiring restaurants and food-service vendors to seek alternative solutions for beverages. Where some quick-service restaurants are experimenting with non-plastic options, Starbucks is forgoing straws altogether and testing strawless lids for its beverages.

According to an article on Nation’s Restaurant News, the corporate-owned coffee brand plans to roll out the strawless lids not just in Seattle but in all of its stores worldwide by 2020.

To immediately comply with the plastic straw ban, Starbucks’ Seattle stores are offering non-plastic, compostable straws until the new lids are introduced in the fall.

“As the largest food and beverage retailer to make such a commitment, Starbucks will eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year from Starbucks stores,” said a Starbucks representative in a statement.
