According to Periscope, more than 110 years of live video are watched every day via the app on iOS and Android. That’s a lot of video for a company that just celebrated its one-year anniversary last weekend. And what a year it’s been.

As was reported in venturebeat.com, Periscope has gone from being a startup to being acquired to growing within Twitter as a foundation of the company’s efforts to reestablish energy and momentum.

Periscope launched on March 26, 2015 grounded in the idea that you could discover the world through someone else’s eyes. Essentially, it is a live video-broadcasting app that empowers curators to connect with a broader community by broadcasting whatever it is they want to show. In Periscope’s own words, “A picture may be worth a thousand words, but live video can take you some place and show you around.”

According to the venturebeat.com story, Twitter is placing a lot of emphasis on Periscope as it moves forward and in February, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey even elevated the head of Periscope to his executive team. In just the last year alone, Periscope has launched on iOS, Android and Apple TV while adding new features such as landscape support, web profiles, GoPro video support and the ability to view streams within tweets.

While year one has certainly been successful for Periscope, questions still linger such as how the live video service intends to monetize the app, how brands will continue to use it as part of their marketing mix, and how it will stand up to the introduction of other live video services from competitors like Facebook and YouTube. And it would be an understatement to say that Twitter has a lot riding on the success of Periscope, as user numbers remain stagnant for the 140-character social media icon.
