QSR: Three Ways To Keep Top Talent At Your Restaurant

Given the restaurant industry’s issues with quick turnover, it’s more important than ever to keep your top talent

A lack of recognition, being overworked, and not being paid sufficiently are the most obvious reason employees quit. However, some of the other reasons aren’t quite as obvious. QSR spoke with 20 general managers who work at heavily trafficked fast casual restaurants to learn more about how they keep their best talent. From these conversations, QSR sites the following as the best practices to prevent turnover and keep employees engaged.

  • Give employees the opportunity to be creative

Leverage the information and expertise your front-of-the-line employees are gathering. Allowing employees to brainstorm helps them to feel that they’re part of the business, and therefore, care more in the long run.

  • Invest in your employees

Employees shouldn’t stop learning after their initial training period ends. To keep employees engaged, they need to be constantly challenged in constructive ways. For your more talented employees, QSR suggests giving them more ambitious goals to 1) motivate them and 2) level the playing field for some of your slower-learning employees.

  • Recognize leadership potential and begin grooming talent from the start

According to QSR, a lot of employee dissatisfaction come from not feeling they have the ability to climb the ladder. Promoting an employee because of their seniority, rather than an employee who has the necessary abilities to manage, can cause disengagement and frustration among staff.
