Vietnam Veteran Helps Others Through Home-Care

After multiple years of service in the Vietnam War in the mid-1960s followed by a career in financial IT, John Major has dedicated his work to helping others.

The Staten Island native, 71, bought two Right at Home county territories to serve Union and Morris counties in the early 2000s. He was motivated to buy the franchise after seeing the sub-par care his mother received late in her life.

“I found out it’s a whole industry, and it was growing because of the aging population,” Major said. “I looked at three or four different franchise options but I made the right decision with Right at Home. They are good folks and it is a solid business.”

His franchise venture allowed him to help families like his own, but also gave him a way to assist another “family” he cares deeply about — military veterans.

“That’s what I like, to go out and visit and get the stories,” Major said. “It’s fun to get out of the office and visit with these guys.”

As Major approaches retirement age, he hopes his franchise will remain a family business.

“My youngest daughter has been here for four years and my older daughter, because her kids are getting older, can spend more time here,” he said. “We have not made definitive plans, but they have an eye on it. I hope they will.”
