Throughout our adolescence, we are constantly being told what to do and what not to do to ensure we know right from wrong. Take it from me; my big brother learned at the age of seven that you don’t teach your three-year-old sister how to swim by pushing her in and yelling, “I’m teaching you how to swim!”

How many times have you wished you had a manual to guide you through your adult life? I know I’ve come to many crossroads, and I always wished I had someone or something guiding me to the correct conclusion.

The IFA Conference is the Super Bowl of the franchising world. Not only are you representing yourself, but most importantly, you’re representing your brand. Maureen DiStefano has an extensive background in franchise development throughout the country with popular brands such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Arby’s and Popeye’s. She has provided a few tips to help guide us through this year’s IFA Conference, which will be hosted in San Antonio, Texas.

Set a Goal for Yourself

“It is such an enormous show, just from the attendees and the variety of brands that are there. Be sure to plan your trip accordingly and take advantage of the schedule. If you need to manage CFE credits, work towards accomplishing that. Also, set a certain number of classes you wish to attend,” DiStefano said.

Eat Less, Sleep More & Drink in Moderation

Make reservations at the places you want to dine at in San Antonio with those you want to connect with to discuss business ventures. Although it can be entertaining for the rest of us, when one drinks too much, stories with your brand’s name attached will begin to circulate after the conference. Limit yourself. Have a good time, but don’t let this be your first rodeo.

The Gift of Gab: Network, Network & Network
This is the one place where you do not want to say, “I’m sorry, I ran out of business cards.” The conference has thousands of attendees who could be potential business partners.

If you’re a first-timer, attend the welcome happy hour for newbies. You’ll have a built-in network of contacts before the conference even starts,” said Lauren Moorman, Vice President of Client Services at No Limit Agency*.

“Do your research and find out who it is you want to meet with, and instead of trying to do an impromptu meeting, organize your trip so you get in front of someone who could be a business opportunity for the upcoming year,” DiStefano added.

Dress for Comfortable Success

The IFA Convention is pretty large in size, and you will spend hours walking to different sessions. Now, in no way does that mean it's OK to show up in sweatpants and Crocs, but remember that how you dress is a reflection of you and your business.
