The 2016 presidential race is underway. Don’t worry—even if you don’t have a horse in the race for the Commander in Chief, there is still a lot a small business owner can do at a local level to make a difference.

Here are a few tips to get involved in local politics:

Be informed
Before getting involved in politics at any level, it’s important to know what you’re talking about. That includes knowing what issues are important to you and your business, and what’s going on in the community and world. Once you are informed and educated on the topics, then you can make an informed and educated decision about the type of political arena you want to enter.

Run for office
You don’t have to be running in a national race to run for office. Local government is a great way to get involved and get your voice heard. From city council to the school board and public works, there are numerous opportunities to find a place in government.

To run for office, there are registration requirements and campaigns to consider, but it’s about spending the time to get out there and meet with the people to get your point across.

Work for a campaign
If running for government isn’t your thing, there are always opportunities to work for a political campaign. From hitting the pavement and spreading the word to having more responsibility, local elections still require manpower.

Volunteer on a board or commission
One way to get involved is volunteering your time to a local board or commission. This is a great way to get your feet wet and start interacting with the political system. Another benefit of volunteering is being able to choose what interests you to really spend your time effectively.

Join your local political party
Even when it’s not election season, there are still opportunities to throw your hat into local politics. By joining your local political party, you will be kept up-to-date with the happening of the state of politics on a local level. In addition to being in the know, there are also opportunities to run for positions within many organizations.

Become a member of a local business association
Just like the powerful lobbyists of Capitol Hill, business associations still have political pull at the local level. Joining a local business association can provide a franchisee with the opportunity to get their issues in front of the policy makers. In addition to that, it’s also a great networking opportunity.

Donate
Money talks. Donate to legislatures who represent you and your business needs. It’s a great way to help the cause.

Be a poll watcher
If jumping into the political ring isn’t for you, there are ways to participate without having to pick a side. Volunteering to be a poll watcher or vote counter is a way to get involved at the local level. It’s providing a service and helping the local government elect the next leaders.

Attend community and open city council meetings
Being an informed citizen is one of the biggest responsibilities someone can have. Attending community and open city council meetings allows you to stay informed and learn about what’s happening in the community around you. Often time’s, local lawmakers will take into account the needs of community members.

Go to social events with local politicians
In politics, sometimes it’s all about whom you know. That’s why attending social events and rubbing elbows with local politicians and the politically connected is a great way to be introduced into the local political scene. Who knows? You may just meet someone who can help advance your political aspirations.
