Texas has a lot more to offer businesses than wide-open spaces. According to Texas Wide Open for Business, Texas’ corporate franchise tax levies a low flat rate of around 0.5 percent or one percent on taxable margins. With a low overall tax burden, many franchisors have their sights set on Texas.

Brands are making moves into the area for the lure of the state’s strong economy, the people and the opportunities the Lone Star State offers.

Strong Economy
In the last decade, Texas has added over 2.15 million net new jobs, according to Texas Wide Open For Business. That coupled with the fact that Texas has no personal income tax, have allowed the residents of the Lone Star State to have an ample economy, which businesses have grown to love.

“We have indicators that we look for, such as a strong economy,” said Steve Shields, franchise development manager with Smoothie King. “The Texas economy and the business environment in Texas have been historically very strong and steady. There is a lot of growth and economic development. Those things coincide with what we look for.”

Great People
With the state motto being “Friendship” there’s no wonder the people of the great state of Texas play an important role in the movement of businesses to the area. According to Texas Wide Open for Business, Texas is home to the nation’s second largest civilian labor force with over 13 million workers. Of that workforce, over 4.1 million Texans whoa re 25 years or older have a bachelor’s degree, or higher.

“For our brand to be successful, we need population density, good jobs and disposable income for a healthy and active lifestyle,” Shields said. “It goes hand in hand with us. Households with kids are more likely to frequent Smoothie King. Texas has a lot of good regions and strong metro locations that are real strong markets for us.”

And one thing MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes* knows is that people in Texas love burgers.

“Burgers are huge in Texas,” said Tim Markle, director of development with MOOYAH. “If you don’t want a burger, you can eat a turkey burger or a veggie patty. With our super customizable menu, and that fact that we offer vegetation options it’s been very successful.”

That’s one reason why MOOYAH, which is based in Dallas, plans on expanding.

“We are serious about the food,” said Markle. “We want to make great burgers fries and shakes, and we want to have fun doing it. We think we will be seriously fun and people will take advantage of it.”

Opportunity
The stars at night are big and bright and so are the opportunities available to businesses in the Lone Star State. That’s why Texas is consistently listed as one of the best states for business.

Success is the name of the game in Texas. That’s’ why so many brands are eager to expand their footprint. For Smoothie King, the brand has more stores in Texas than any other state in the U.S.

“The simple answer is, we’ve had a lot of success in Texas and it comes back to the fact that we have great franchisees in Texas,” said Shields. “We’ve done a nice job strategically development the markets. Wherever we have healthy and active lifestyles that works for us.”
