When TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® started out as an idea for an after school family business with a hand drawn logo more than 30 years ago, little did the founding family know it would grow, one move at a time, into the powerhouse moving franchise it is today with more than 340 locations, 2,000 trucks and 8,000 employees.

In 2016 alone, the brand opened 21 new locations and signed 19 additional franchise agreements. Among those 21 new locations were units in New Jersey and Maine – the first TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations in those states.

“2016 was another great year for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Franchise Development Manager Noelle Burak. “We opened two new states, introduced new service lines, and helped move thousands of businesses and families where they needed to go.”

In New Jersey, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® welcomed two new franchisees. Brittany Ishman first worked in the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® corporate office, and when the New Jersey territory became available, she jumped at the opportunity.

“We’ve always encouraged employees – from those in the corporate office to those on our trucks – to aspire to become franchisees,” said Burak. “In fact, a large percent of our franchisees came up through our system as employees.”

Complementing Ishman is New Jersey franchisee Jason Washburn, who won the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® scholarship program. A former TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® manager, Washburn went through the one-year scholarship program where he learned about every aspect of the franchise business – from legal to operations, human resources, financial planning, marketing, and more. As the winner, Washburn was awarded $50,000 to put toward opening his own franchise.

“The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Scholarship Program was an amazing experience that allowed me to develop a real understanding of every aspect of this business,” said Washburn. “I’m excited to open up the state of New Jersey alongside my fellow franchisee Brittany Ishman and expand the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand.”

In Montana, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® will be opening two new locations in Missoula and Kalispell as part of its Mini-Market development model. This development strategy allows the brand to expand into territories with populations between 75,000 to 200,000, which are much smaller than its traditional population density target of 420,000 people. More of an owner/operator system, the Mini-Market model allows franchisees such as the Heslop family of Kalispell and Devin O’Neal of Missoula to operate their businesses with less staff and less trucks.

“The adaptability of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® to come into a smaller market like Missoula speaks volumes about the brand and its commitment to servicing the entire country – not just large cities,” said O’Neal. “There is a need for moving services in Missoula, and I’m excited to be one of the first franchisees to open the state of Montana on behalf of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®.”

Rounding out its two-state expansion was the signing of a franchisee agreement for Portland, Maine, which marked the brand’s first foray into the northern New England state.

“As we look to grow in 2017, the openings in New Jersey and Maine, and the addition of Montana in early 2017, will provide future growth opportunities for new and existing franchisees,” said Burak. “In 2017, we’re targeting to sign 25 traditional markets and five Mini-Markets as part of our growth strategy while opening an additional 25 locations across the country.”
