With diverse backgrounds in financial services, software sales and managing a wine shop, Tim Kiran, Jeremy McDuffie and Brian Churney started out as employees of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® — a venture that would lead them to business ownership.

The three employees got their start at the Durham, North Carolina location of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. Kiran and Churney worked as managers and estimators, while McDuffie held a position as a mover. In 2006, Kiran and Churney opened their first location as owners in Greenville, North Carolina. McDuffie transferred along with them and worked his way up into management, eventually joining his two friends as owners at the trio’s new mini-market location in the Outer Banks.

“TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is always trying to move people forward, so it’s easy to jump on that opportunity and make moves,” McDuffie said. “If you put in the hard work, you can get the opportunity. As employees, we could easily see the opportunity that franchising with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK provided.”

With a strategy to grow beyond its 380+ existing locations and enter budding new territories, North America’s largest franchised moving has been working with franchise owners who want to expand or join the system with its a mini-market model.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s mini-market territory allows franchise owners to expand to underserved areas with smaller populations ranging from 100,000 to 225,000 people, which is much smaller than a franchise’s normal reach. The mini-market model also allows franchisees to enjoy much more flexibility in their work and have less worry about staffing sizes and the number of trucks in communities where the demand for a high-quality moving service is still high.

“We’re excited to expand the company’s footprint and bring a high level of service to an underserved market,” Kiran said. “It’s great that we can come in and make a difference immediately.”

In making the move from employees to owners, McDuffie, Kiran and Churney joined the one-third of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s franchise system that also started out as employees and now own their own location.

“We pride ourselves on helping our franchisees turn jobs into careers,” said President Randy Shacka. “When someone comes to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, our goal is to give them the tools they need to advance their careers and eventually own their own locations. We’re so proud of this crew for achieving their goal of business ownership while opening in a new territory to provide top notch customer service.”

The brand takes pride in its reputation and referral rate, which is currently 96%.

“We respected the system and wanted to stay with the brand,” Churney said. “I remember going to my first convention and being greeted with a hug and not a handshake, and that said a lot about the company and the way they respected their franchisees. Because TWO MEN AND A TRUCK promotes so many of their employees to be franchise owners, it’s easy to see the benefits.”

There are currently 11 mini-markets across the U.S. Mini-market opportunities are available in hot territories where TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is looking to develop a stronger presence, including Georgia, Kentucky, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Wyoming and West Virginia.

Franchise opportunities for standard markets range from $179,400 to $595,000 and mini-market opportunities range from $100,000 to $222,000. Learn more, here.
