San Antonio is an eclectic city full of rich history and diverse neighborhoods. While the usual landmarks like the Alamo and the River Walk are on most to-do lists, this quintessential American Southwest city has way more to offer—if you know where to look. San Antonio is hosting the International Franchise Association Convention February 20 to February 23 and there are a number of things attendees can do in the host city during off hours. Here’s where to start:

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

The state of Texas has a storied history, and San Antonio is at the apex. One of the best places to see Texas history is the San Antonio Missions National Park. The National Park contains four of the five Spanish frontier missions that were part of a Spanish colonization that started in the 1700s. You can learn about the Spanish and Native American heritage that was present in the city’s early days. Plus, this attraction is free—who doesn’t love free things?

Smoke

It's sacrilege not to have barbeque when you come down to Texas. There are a number of barbeque joints in the city, but one of the newest locales to pop up is Smoke. Messy BBQ may not be the best idea for franchisees that are looking to network at the convention, but if you’re in the mood to indulge, try Smoke’s tender and juicy brisket.

Hotel Emma

When you first walk into the Hotel Emma, you’ll feel like you have entered a plush hotel only seen in Hollywood movies. The rustic-designed lobby is a great place to take a load off and relax after a long day of talking franchising. And visitors can pass the time thanks to an expansive library donated by the Harvard University Society of Fellows.

San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo

The San Antonio Spurs may be out of town during the IFA Convention, so visitors can go to the next best sporting event—the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The event has 1.6 million visitors each year and has a number of different attractions including a carnival, live music, horse auctions, food, drinks and, of course, an old fashioned rodeo by some of San Antonio’s best cowboys. You’ll feel like a real Texan after stopping by this event during your time off, so saddle up!
