This time of year is when I start to reflect on our annual goals and determine if we had a successful year or not. I also look at our franchisees and do a review of their performance and review if they reached their goals we set in January. As I began to do my review I started to think about patterns I see over and over again with underperforming businesses over the years with the hundreds of franchises I have helped ramp up. And then it hit me! What did Taylor Swift do in 2014 to reach her goals that underperformers did not? Swift’s new album, 1989 sold almost 1.3 million copies in its first week. It is the only album of 2014 to go platinum, a milestone that is increasingly difficult to reach in the music industry.

So, what are the biggest differences between the "genius" of Taylor Swift and small businesses that struggle year in and year out?

1. She Has "Team Taylor" and you still need to hire staff-One of the biggest difference between successful and struggling small businesses is in regards to having a full team/staff on hand to run the business. Often the mentality I have seen is "I can't afford more people" or "I'll hire staff when I'm making money". Taylor literally has an army to help drive her organization. From managers, publicity teams, tour logistics, finance, it goes on and on. Taylor had a big label support from the start and without a team on board there's a good chance she would still be playing acoustic guitar singing songs at a local coffee shop. Taylor has a team and without it she wouldn't have hit her goals in 2014.

2. Taylor Swift Invests in Marketing and You Want to Argue about ROI- She not only has sold more than 26 million albums but also has 43.6 million followers on Twitter and 11 million followers on Instagram. Swift also comes up with creative ways to tease album releases and keep her fans on their toes. All while maintaining an approachable, down-to-earth personality. Over the last 90 days it's hard to turn on a TV and not see Taylor Swift. All of this costs time and money. Most small businesses underestimate the time and financial investment that it takes to build their brand. Taylor invested big time in marketing and it paid off in 2014. She gets the importance of marketing and ROI.

3. Taylor Sells on Value Not on Price-I can't tell you how many times I have heard this comment "My market is different than any other part of the county.People here are cheap!" When sales staff can't communicate the true value of their product or service they go to the crutch: price discounting. This often can result in not only unprofitable business but can jeopardize their livelihood. The first week Taylor’s album came out, you could only get it in a few key places: i-Tunes, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, and Target (where it was priced at $14/high on the average sales price of a CD). But the tools Swift didn't use are as important as the ones she did. By refusing to release her singles on Spotify, or any other streaming site, she pushed her fans to buy the album. Spotify pays the artist pennies on the dollar. Taylor Swift skipped it. Taylor Swift is absolutely right: “Music is art, art has real value, and artists deserve to be paid for it”. She “gets selling on value which helped her reach another goal in 2014.

4. Taylor Swift Has a Great Personality and You Don't- The older I get the more important I find a positive attitude is in predicting business success. Very rarely do I see a negative/glass half empty guy who is a success. People are attracted to positive, happy, fun people in life. Footage emerged last week from Taylors “1989 Secret Sessions” campaign, wherein she hosted exclusive listening parties of her new album for fans that involved having them come over to her house, baking them cookies, dancing around with everyone, and then dispensing hugs like they were going out of style. Even the <a href="http://www.dailydot.com/tags/youtube/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=why-taylor-swift-hit-her-goals-in-2014-and-you-didnt-989" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">YouTube</a> comments on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp%3Bv=EKnl7STzSMU&utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=why-taylor-swift-hit-her-goals-in-2014-and-you-didnt-989" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">video</a> are a veritable love fest (minus some debate over how many men she’s dated, in typical YouTube fashion), with "Swifties"gushing over what a “normal” and “down to earth” person Taylor is. Not that this is the "real" person but she has done an amazing job of producing a girl-next door persona who relates to a large demographic. Both customers and employees are turned off by “Debbie Downer.” A negative attitude is contagious and it isn't something that will be a building block for success. Taylor is someone who is likeable and relatable which helped sell her brand globally in 2014.

5. Taylor Swift is “All In” While You're Still Part-Time- Often you will hear about people who want to find a business they work part time or is an absentee model. This rarely works. Full time profits typically require full time efforts. One of the biggest causes of business failure is not putting in the required time and effort. Taylor has an incredible work ethic and there is probably a reason she is single at 25. She is laser focused on her career and works harder than the bulk of the entertainment field. When I see people who don't have passion for their business they rarely succeed and generally won't put in the time and energy needed. Taylor was “all in” in 2014 and got results from her passion and work effort.

6. Taylor Responds to Change and You Are Paralyzed-In business there are times when you will experience change and must adapt. Whether the model changes, the economy, world events, you must be able to adapt to survive. Taylor Swift got her start in fairly traditional country and her music has evolved continually. Her latest album is a departure from country-pop to a pure pop music which has a much broader consumer base. Her audience is growing up and embracing other genres like rap and this has helped spark sales. Businesses that don't stay current with the most recent changes to their industry and future trends often will fail.

Her music may not be for everyone, but the marketing/business genius of Taylor Swift should not go unadmired. If more of my franchisees had these six traits our sales would sky rocket. In 2015 think about how you can change your focus to reach your goals and how you can be more like Taylor. And I’m kind of shocked that I wrote that last sentence…

Franchise sales are changing quickly as AI becomes a more active part of how candidates research brands. Prospective franchisees are using tools like ChatGPT and Gemini to ask about investment levels, risks and brand differences before they ever speak with a franchisor. Research that once played out through brokers, discovery days or website visits is now happening in real time through AI responses.“Step one is understanding your current footprint,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/powills/">Nick Powills</a>, chief growth officer at&nbsp;<a href="https://hellomainland.com/">Mainland</a> and chief strategy officer at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.goodsparkfranchise.com/">GoodSpark Franchise Growth Accelerator</a>, on a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uPCdn9Ht4w">recent podcast</a>. “There are general searches you can run in Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude. Ask if your franchise is a good franchise, and you’ll get an answer. Then ask what the potential gaps are, and you’ll get that answer back as well.”The challenge is that AI is doing more than repeating what is already out there. It is making connections, drawing comparisons and helping shape how brands are presented next to other options. As a result, website copy, press coverage and other outside content all play a role in how a brand is categorized. If that story is not clear and consistent, AI may fill in the gaps with outdated or incomplete information.“The starting line is having a clear understanding of what AI is saying,” said Powills. “Be a candidate of your own franchise and evaluate the pros and cons.”At the core of this shift is a change in where trust is built. Instead of relying solely on direct conversations, candidates are increasingly trusting AI to guide their research and validate opportunities. That places new pressure on franchisors to not only manage their brand story, but to ensure it is structured, consistent and visible across the sources AI relies on.“There’s a big opportunity here. We’re at a starting point, or a major acceleration point, in a massive shift,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/charles-internicola/">Charles Internicola</a>, CEO of&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/goodspark">GoodSpark</a>. “Information is becoming inexpensive, and people can instantly ask AI about your brand or category. Your challenge, and your opportunity, is to intercept that and feed AI the information that genuinely tells your story and gets you ahead of the curve.”For franchisors, that means rethinking franchise sales as a process that begins before outreach ever happens. It now starts with how AI understands and presents the brand.A transcript of Internicola’s and Powills’ discussion has been provided below. It has been edited for brevity, clarity and style.Charles Internicola: Franchise brands, and really every business, face AI as both a challenge and an opportunity. Today, we’re going to talk about four steps you should be taking right now to AI-proof your franchise sales process, make structured changes to your website and brand story, and energize your franchise sales process through AI SEO and AI-driven franchise sales.It feels like the world is changing by the second. Progress in one week now feels like what used to take years. We’re going to talk about AI SEO, franchise sales and all the shifts happening right now with AI, LLM models and automation. How does it impact the franchise sales process, and how do you take advantage of it as a franchisor?This is a big topic for our&nbsp;<a href="https://www.francampgrowth.com/">FranCamp</a> conference in June, but the most important thing today is the foundation. If I’m a franchise brand, there’s the old world that existed just weeks ago, and now everything is AI-driven. The brand story, information about franchise sales, franchise opportunities, whether brokers still have a role and the entire discovery process are all changing. So where is the right starting point to build that foundation?Nick Powills: Step one is understanding your current footprint. There are general searches you can run in Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude. Ask if your franchise is a good franchise, and you’ll get an answer. Then ask what the potential gaps are, and you’ll get that answer back as well.As you work through the questions a candidate would ask, you start seeing how you show up. From there, you can decide if you like that narrative, how you would adjust it and what you should do from a process standpoint to create a new narrative. That gives you the pathway to build out the content that needs to integrate, both from a form and function standpoint.Charles, you do a great job structuring websites so AI can read them, index them and use them as a reference point. Right now, there’s a game to be played. It goes back to early Google SEO, when it was critical before all the algorithm changes. Brands invested heavily to make sure they ranked for their name and category.Over time, that shifted. The system took over, and there was less you could control outside of content. So first, understand your footprint. Second, understand the format so you know how to build for AI search. Third, put it to work and invest in it.Franchise brands already have budget buckets like conferences, digital advertising, PR and content. Now there’s a new one, AI SEO. You either pull from other buckets or start budgeting differently. What’s going to happen is the value of the broker will start to decline. Brokers act as coaches, and AI is going to act as a coach. So you want to invest in influencing that “coach.” The starting line is having a clear understanding of what AI is saying. Be a candidate of your own franchise and evaluate the pros and cons.Internicola: We’re going to move through this quickly, and if you haven’t been to FranCamp, this will be a major focus. Nick’s advice applies to every business. Start by going to different AI models and asking about your brand and your category. Ask what’s a good investment. Evaluate the information, where it’s coming from and how it’s being presented.The key is shaping it in a genuine way. There’s a big opportunity here. We’re at a starting point, or a major acceleration point, in a massive shift. Information is becoming inexpensive, and people can instantly ask AI about your brand or category. Your challenge, and your opportunity, is to intercept that and feed AI the information that genuinely tells your story and gets you ahead of the curve.Starting with strategy, understand your sales channels, including brokers. In many ways, AI is becoming the new franchise broker. That’s a mindset shift. The old funnel of trade shows, visits, portals, brokers, websites and traditional research is being disrupted. AI will not only explain your brand, it will evaluate FDDs and compare opportunities. These are data sets you need to understand.So Nick, if I’m doing my own searches and seeing what AI says about my brand, what should I focus on and change?Powills: First, build a landing page, an extension of your website, call it your AI FAQ. Start building a heavy content page that answers questions from a buyer’s perspective. Even if you’re just answering a few questions at first, it’s an easy win.Second, start categorizing and archiving past content. For example, a brand we work with had a QSR magazine cover story that hasn’t been shown to candidates in years. It was a strong PR moment and still carries authority. Go back through your history and identify those signature pieces, then bring them back to life.Build a blog or content section and aggregate those materials. Many brands have news sections filled with weak content. What matters is authority, and authority comes from credible human sources. Those are two strong starting points.Internicola: That last point is critical. Authority comes from humans, and third-party validation adds credibility. You can even ask AI what pages it’s referencing about your company and what information would help it better understand your brand.AI needs to understand what your brand is about, what category you fit into and how you compare. It’s going to classify you — service, retail, restaurant, investment level — in a very mechanical way. You need to feed that data.Real content matters as well. Podcasts, conversations and older PR pieces all contribute. AI looks for that third-party validation. There are also technical elements like schema and metadata. AI bots are reading behind your pages, so you need to be aware of that.AI is going to classify your brand, compare you to alternatives and predict buyer fit. Your messaging needs to reflect that. It also needs to go deeper and tell a real story. If you’re featured on third-party sites, bring that back onto your own website and reinforce it.Nick, AI is constantly answering what the franchise is, who it’s for and why it’s better. Where do you see this going?Powills: It’s still the Wild West. AI is only as good as the information it pulls, and it hasn’t fully established authority sources yet. For example, I asked ChatGPT to help with an NCAA bracket, and it gave answers with teams that weren’t even playing. It wanted to respond, but the data wasn’t reliable.That’s the risk. If your content isn’t set up correctly, AI could misrepresent your brand. If there’s outdated or negative information online, even if it’s no longer relevant, AI may surface it. So you have to monitor and shape your presence carefully.Internicola: It won’t always be this way, but right now it is the Wild West. You can shape your AI story, but you need to do so genuinely. Let’s go through the framework, starting with defining your category.Powills: This is about going deeper. Saying “low-cost handyman franchise” isn’t enough. Instead, say something like “scalable home service platform for owner-operators.” That positions the opportunity differently and sets expectations. It allows AI to categorize you more accurately instead of lumping you in with everyone else.Internicola: This is a mindset shift. Move away from generic language and define what makes your model scalable and what transformation it creates. You’re not just defining your category, you’re reshaping it.Powills: AI ranks categories, not logos. This is your “why you, why now.” It should live in your footer and across your site so there’s consistency. It defines who you’re for and why the opportunity makes sense financially.Internicola: If your site doesn’t clearly explain your opportunity, AI will overlook you. This is an easy fix. Next is engineering your entity graph.Powills: This is about consistency across channels, PR, website, listings and everything else. Think about how brands repeat the same message everywhere. Franchise brands don’t always do this well. You need consistent storytelling across all platforms.Internicola: AI looks for repetition and consistency. If your messaging appears across third-party sites and your own site, it builds authority. Align everything, your website, listings and PR.Powills: Creating training-style content is critical. If you don’t train AI to tell your story, it won’t tell it correctly. It’s the same as brokers. If you don’t train them, they won’t sell your brand well.Internicola: Exactly. Finally, build trust signals outside your website, podcasts, interviews, LinkedIn and press, but with real depth and authenticity.Powills: Podcasts aren’t about audience size. One podcast can help you refine your message. You can turn that content into text, post it on your site and distribute it across channels. One piece can drive multiple outcomes.Internicola: Thanks for joining us. By the time the scissors are ready to cut, you’ve moved on.&nbsp;Now try this:&nbsp; After a Career-Ending Injury, Former Ohio Track Athlete Is Bringing National Fitness Franchise to Combat the City’s Post-Pandemic Health Crisis.See the difference? Maybe images of a former athlete jumping a hurdle spring to mind, or an in-studio demonstration. Suddenly, there’s an opportunity to highlight statistics around an important, timely health issue that the brand is working to address.&nbsp;Framing matters. People matter — more than brands think. This isn’t just a happy accident of copywriting. It’s a calculated editorial strategy that is heavily implemented at Mainland to land placements and media buys.<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/morgan-wood1/">Morgan Wood</a>, content manager at Mainland, has personally published more than 2,000 articles for&nbsp;<a href="http://1851franchise.com">1851Franchise.com</a>. But why? But why?” That was always me as a kid. I think I have a natural curiosity for everything, and I really think that everybody has an interesting story. It's just a matter of getting to it.A lot of times, the franchisees we’re working with will come on the call and say, "I don't know why you want to talk to me. My story is not that interesting.”&nbsp;There's a level of fulfillment and satisfaction in being able to see them see themselves in someone else's eyes and realizing what their story can mean and can do. It’s really fun.1851:&nbsp;What do you think about Mainland’s “Brands don’t sell brands, people do” method?Wood:&nbsp;When I'm browsing, I'm going to click on stuff that I feel like I relate to or something that is a human interest story.In franchising, people often think, “I'd love to do that, but I don't know if I can,” or “Somebody else can do it, but I just can't.”&nbsp;Being able to see the kind of person that's doing it, and, no matter who you are, there's someone who has a similar background or that you can relate to in some way, that has done it. I think putting that out there makes people curious. And then you click in, and it's their life story and their experiences. The reader likely doesn’t know this person, specifically, but it’s possible they have very similar experiences.I think that can draw people in more effectively than “This restaurant is growing!” or “This business is opening!” ever could.1851: How do you tell your writers to find the human hero in the story?Wood:&nbsp;We have talked a lot about continuing to ask the questions. Again, everyone has a story. We just have to get to it. I've said countless times, “Just keep asking. There has to be something. Think outside the box. Get curious on these calls with the franchisee, and really think about what is special about this person.”&nbsp;One of our questions for franchisee feature interviews is “What do you want me to know about you?” That opens it up. Regardless of your business or what you did before you bought a franchise, what do you want me to know about you?Being able to do that and dig deeper, even when there may not be an immediate connection between this story and their franchise journey, is really valuable. There have been times when it “clicks” later, and the writer realizes, “Oh, that's why they're the hero!”1851: Headlines and images are the first two things that people see. Are there any tricks in your bag when it comes to headlines and imagery to get picked up?Wood: Specifically in headlines, we want to talk about the human hero, but we don't necessarily want to say their name. We want to say who they are.&nbsp;More people are going to search for things like “veteran franchisee” or “moms in franchising”&nbsp; rather than a name that they’ve never heard before.It also has to be interesting, but you can't give everything away in the headline.&nbsp;And then with the image, just as much as possible, get a picture of a real person. It’s as simple as having something that people care about, and something that will catch a reader’s eye. If we’re talking about a person, we don’t want a stock image that someone will scroll right past.1851: Do you have any advice that you would give brands looking to get started right away?Wood: I think many in the franchise space have heard of the franchise horror stories: “I pay my franchise fee and the franchisor disappears,” or “I'm just a store number to them, I'm not a person.”One of our clients often says that, to be a franchisor, you need to understand what the franchisee is going through. When someone at the franchisor gets home from work, their family will ask, “How was work?” When a franchisee gets home, their family is asking, “How were sales today?” or “How was traffic?” These are franchise units, but they often represent the investment of someone’s life savings and a manifestation of so many hopes and dreams for the future. We can’t lose sight of that.&nbsp;No matter how big the brand gets or how fast they're growing, franchisors need to remember that these are real people with real backgrounds. Many have real families that this is supporting, and they've invested so much into this business. They’re building something in their communities and trying to make the most of the opportunity.They can’t just be viewed as “the person that's going to help me get a PR win.” They're still people. When you start from a place of humanity, the rest comes more naturally.Growing and selling franchises is difficult. It has been edited for content, brevity and style.Nick Powills: All right, Dan, I like to start with you, and then we'll get into the brand. Question one is scripted; everything else is not. But I know you have a great story. How did you accidentally fall into franchising? What is your franchise backstory?Dan Stone: I’ll keep a long story short. I am obsessed with roller coasters and theme parks and have been since I was a kid. I wanted to major in theme park management, so I went to my guidance counselor in high school to figure out what colleges offered it. I was really disappointed to learn that didn't exist, and the closest thing to it was hospitality management — hotel and restaurant management.I went to school for hotel and restaurant management, and for the first 10 years of my career, I worked for a hotel management company. Most hotel brands are franchised, so we managed hotels for owners who were franchising Marriott, Embassy Suites, Hilton and other brands. That was my exposure and introduction to franchising. I then took my franchise and food and beverage background from the hotel side to Melting Pot when I joined nearly 20 years ago.Powills: That’s crazy. Before I get to Melting Pot, I’m curious — and this relates back to what franchisees and even what I go through — I wanted to be a baseball player who rode a motorcycle. I had to be good at baseball for that to happen, so it wasn't going to happen. But you have this dream. There are games like RollerCoaster Tycoon that allow you to build your theme parks. Flash forward: How do you let go of that dream and let it evolve into a 20-year career at Melting Pot and still look in the mirror in the morning and say, "I did live my dream"? How do you go through that mentally?Stone: Great question. Obviously, I’m not managing a theme park today, but I have manifested elements of that dream by making a point to travel, visit theme parks, ride new roller coasters, and stay up to date with the industry. The dream has become more of a passion and a hobby outside of work.The hospitality industry is very similar to a theme park. While I’m not managing roller coasters, I am very much in the people business; I just happen to be in the business of fondue versus thrill rides. If you strip that away, most everything else is the same. It’s about managing people, getting the right people on the team, and delivering an experience to the customer that they’ll never forget. Melting Pot is so experience-based that the dream shifted. I’m still satisfied 20 years later with this detour and how I’m getting my theme park fix.Powills: If I think about the feeling a human gets from a theme park or a roller coaster, it’s an emotion. Restaurant brands that can deliver a similar emotion create a memory, and a memory is what eventually brings them back or builds an affinity for the brand. Even though a bite of food is not the same as a ride, there are a lot of similarities.When I accidentally fell into franchising as a journalist, I found it fascinating that almost everyone who bought a franchise had to go through some sort of pain or breakthrough to say, "I’m going to quit my job and open a business for myself." I found it rewarding to find a similarity in my passions so that I wouldn't have regret. Food and hospitality must align with the experience of a theme park or a roller coaster to work, right?Stone: Absolutely. In a typical restaurant, most guests are there primarily to fill a need and satisfy an appetite. Their body says it’s time to consume, so they go eat. That drives a lot of dining out. Melting Pot is a restaurant, but it is so experiential and unique that we are filling more than an appetite. We are satisfying a craving for a unique social dining experience.You look at a typical table and the kids are not on their phones or tablets. If they do have a phone out, it’s because they are filming the magic happening at the table. They are very engaged with one another. In a typical restaurant, the kids feel like it’s the last place they want to be; they aren't having conversations with their family. That is the magic of Melting Pot.Powills: I didn't know your affinity for theme parks. That experience is part of the magic a franchise buyer sees when they buy into Melting Pot. They see something different. You can see it when the kids are engaging at a table and not stuck on a phone. They aren't just going there to feed an appetite; they're going there to feed the emotion.Stone: Exactly. Our brand’s purpose is celebrating life with the people you care about. I remember the Simon Sinek TED Talk about starting with the "why." People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it. Why we do what we do is celebrating life; what we do is fondue. We are better than anyone on a national scale in fondue, but the "why" we do it is to celebrate life, and that can be anything from a report card to a birthday or 10-year anniversary.So many guests get engaged at Melting Pot because their first date was there. We see them every year on their anniversary. Our franchise owners have an opportunity to be a part of milestone moments that people keep forever. The emotional connection our brand has with our guests is truly something special. The people who join our system are energized by enhancing whatever occasion someone chooses Melting Pot for. That’s how the brand continues to grow 50-plus years later. There are not many brands that have been around 50 years, particularly in the restaurant space.Powills: I think about my own Melting Pot experience. I love it, and I used it as my "date spot" early on. I can go back to a memory instantly. I like Olive Garden, but there is no memory there other than a recognition that I enjoyed the taste.The challenge is that while I have great affinity, Melting Pot is not in the normal mix for me due to proximity or my schedule. How does a brand like this take the stickiness of that memory into the next 50 years?Stone: It is a double-edged sword. When Melting Pot is your special occasion place, we see you every anniversary like clockwork. The flip side is that some guests don't want to dilute that destination by going on a Tuesday night. We own the fact that we are a special occasion restaurant; we would rather have that consistency every year than a hot-and-cold customer.The challenge in a competitive landscape is to attract new customers who also choose us as their special occasion restaurant. Because we aren't a concept where the average guest comes once a month, we must ensure we deliver on the "Perfect Night Out"—our service mantra—so they return for the next occasion. It often permeates into other occasions, like a child’s Sweet 16.Powills: It’s a volume play. A theme park only works if you have that continuing build-up. It turns into a challenge to reintroduce the brand to customers and say, "You haven't been here in a year and a half; come back for X, Y or Z because we have a new ride." It turns into a volume game.Stone: 100%. Universal and Disney are good for each other because they try to outdo each other with new attractions, which is good for Orlando as a whole. Rising tides lift all boats. We need to continue giving guests reasons to come back because there is no shortage of options or larger brands with commercials on TV.Over the last six years, we’ve focused on a major remodel and refresh of our restaurants called "Melting Pot Evolution." It is the single biggest investment into the brand’s physical plant to stay relevant with today’s and tomorrow's consumers. That includes a refreshed logo, changes to the menu, and approachable areas of the restaurant so you don't need a major occasion to visit. We are nearing the completion of that evolution, with about 15 stores left out of nearly 100 set to finish this year.On the food and beverage side, we are focusing more on food trends. We did a Dubai chocolate fondue this past year, and we now have a cadence for food trends. We are also introducing seasonal "Big Night Out" menus — our most popular four-course experience — to offer limited-time flavor profiles.Powills: If Melting Pot is around 50 years from now, what do you think the next big "X" factor is?Stone: If Melting Pot stays true to its North Star and its superpower—which is fondue—it will be around for the next 50 years. If we try to be all things to all people and dilute our superpower, it will water down the magic and weaken our differentiation. For me, it’s not about a 90-degree turn; it’s about honoring our niche. Don't apologize for it; lean into it.Powills: I agree. It’s like the scene in Apollo 13 where they throw everything on the table and say, "This is what we have to get the boys home." If we look at the menu, you can get it all at Melting Pot, plus the experiential side.There is also the opportunity with "kids of kids." After 50 years, we remind the next generation of what it felt like to be a kid in Melting Pot. Now it’s your turn to hand that experience down to your child.Stone: Two things on that. First, on innovation: The cheese course is where most guests start. What if the entree is served with cheese and you dip your proteins into it? That’s using the existing menu but offering it in a way that is not traditionally done.Second, on the nostalgia: A lot of people love Disney World because of the memories they created as a kid. If you go for the first time as an adult, there’s a disconnect. At Melting Pot, kids are actually encouraged to play with their food. They love it for homecoming, prom, and graduations. We might lose them a bit in college when they are on a budget, but they re-engage as young professionals and then bring their own kids. It’s an interesting cycle.Powills: I want to swing into the franchise positioning. What is the value to a franchisee looking at this opportunity?Stone: We do not require a restaurant background. Despite being a restaurant with high-level service and a healthy check average, you do not need to be a restaurateur or a chef. The guest does the cooking. You need to be people-oriented. We are in the people business; we just happen to serve fondue.Having an entrepreneurial spirit is important — someone who can become the "mayor" of their community. As a brand, we gave over $1.2 million to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital this year. We believe in giving back. Franchising is about being in business for yourself, but not by yourself.Melting Pot won't be on every street corner. This is not a burger, pizza, or sandwich shop. In many markets, one or two locations fill the need. You have an opportunity to own something truly unique that isn't a cookie-cutter concept. You can own the only one in your entire metro area.Powills: It’s more than a "widget." It takes a special buyer. On the positive side, you're in a category of one; on the negative side, you're in a category of one.Transparency and expectation-setting are critical in business. The only way you get to 50 years with franchisees who stay in the system and advocate for the brand is if you set expectations. You've done a tremendous job with the customer, the community, and the franchisee. If you've ever thought about owning something where you feel good about it, it costs nothing to reach out.
