TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®a national, full service franchised moving company, aims to make its working environment positive for everyone involved, from movers and drivers to franchisees, customer service representatives and more.

With the summer months quickly approaching, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is ramping up hiring efforts and used the month of April to train franchisees and their teams on best practices to recruit and retain frontline teams for the next several months.

“We got close to 1,000 hires throughout April,” said Sara BennettTWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Chief Talent Officer. “But we probably have another 6,000 to 7,000 more people to hire throughout the remainder of the year to make sure that we have the right amount of people to support the needs of our customers.”

Incentivized Hiring and Recruitment Strategies

Referral bonuses are a big component of hiring at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK and do differ based on the franchise. Since the brand wants people they can rely on, it's a great opportunity for current employees to reach out to people they already know.

“We really focus on the referral bonuses because, once we find people who are the right fit for our brand, we want to find more of those people,” said Kyle Pasqualone, marketing director at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® of Northern Kentucky and Hamilton West. “Ultimately, we want more of our employees representing the brand and being brand ambassadors out in the field.”

At Pasqualone’s locations, the recruiting referral bonus includes a $500 referral bonus to employees, which includes a $100 referral bonus after the first day of hire, $200 after 30 days and an additional $200 after 60 days.

College students are also a large part of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s hiring efforts since they  are typically done with the school year at the same time the brand’s busy season is picking up. In order to reach them, the franchise takes part in career fairs and visits college campuses to meet students and share the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK opportunity.

In fact, Pasqualone himself was originally hired by TWO MEN AND A TRUCK this way.

“I have a soft spot with that because that's how I got hired,” he said. “When I was going to the University of Cincinnati, the brand handed a business card to my old roommate and the opportunity ended up getting passed on to one of my friends, who ended up referring me 30 days after he started. I love engaging with college students and getting them on for the summer.”

Training Initiatives

Once hires are made, franchisees are not on their own to train these new employees. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK has plenty of training support initiatives that make the hiring process all the more streamlined.

For example, there are training classes that new employees can take online. There has also been a major focus on driver training and getting drivers comfortable with being in the truck, notes Bennett. The brand offers specific courses that the drivers take in order to ensure they know how to operate the vehicle. In addition, new drivers can also ride along with other drivers until they are fully comfortable.

“We want to take that to the next step so drivers feel like they have a really good understanding of what they need to do to be the best drivers that they can be,” said Bennett. “So we're really focusing on making sure that’s a robust training program.”

The Best Parts of Working for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK

Bennett says that one of the top pieces of feedback they get from employees in the mover and driver roles is that they really enjoy the opportunity to do something different every day.

“They get to see new places and do new things,” she said. “They’re not just doing the same thing over and over again. There’s a lot of variety in what they are doing.”

She added they also hear employees enjoy the opportunity to operate independently. Once they are trained and trusted to do the job, drivers and movers can go out and operate without having someone micromanage them. TWO MEN AND A TRUCKknows they have the skills and the knowledge to do the job as a team and to work independently. Additionally, the camaraderie of the team is a huge perk, with many employees becoming very close friends with the people they work with everyday.

“Moving is an extremely stressful time for people and our teams come in and save the day for customers,” said Bennett. “I think they really feel a sense of pride to be able to do that.”

Meanwhile, something that most people might not know is that most customers tip their mover and driver, meaning that TWO MEN AND A TRUCK employees end up walking away with substantial earnings on top of their base wages.

Chelsea Grzegorczyk, employment branding manager at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, added that although the drivers and movers are the ones physically having an impact on customers' lives, there are multiple roles throughout the whole TWO MEN AND A TRUCK system that have a positive influence on them.

“Our customer service representatives are on the phone and on email with our customers, while our ops managers can come and do check-ins with the customer and see if they can help with anything,” she said. “Helping people is really huge in our business. Moving can mean so many different things, and we can have a big role in making it a more positive experience for our customers.”
