After just over a year in business and successful expansion to three territories, franchisee&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabrielleyton/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=fresh-coat-painters-franchise-scaling-tips-2730018" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Gabriel Leyton</a> of Fresh Coat Painters serving Punta Gorda and Fresh Coat Painters of North Fort Myers,&nbsp;and his general manager,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/juan-manuel-martinez-del-gallego-64b03491/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=fresh-coat-painters-franchise-scaling-tips-2730018" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Juan Martinez</a>, have leveraged the scalability of the&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/freshcoat/info">Fresh Coat</a> model to build a thriving business, and they have their eyes set on a fourth territory in the future.“It’s been great. I went to training with Fresh Coat in the third week of March 2024, and I did my operational homework before we started working in April,” Martinez said. “In May, we launched our first marketing campaign and got our first leads. Here we are, just over a year later, and we’ve executed about 180 projects.”Leyton and Martinez launched with just one territory in April 2024. In September, they hired an estimator, and by November, they had invested in a second territory.“Operations-wise, the training and support teams give a list of about 150 things to know and do to be successful,” Martinez said. “We marked down what we tried and what worked. The territories can be very different, so some things work better for some owners than others. It’s a lot of test drives. For us, we found that an investment in marketing was very important. They give you the recipe for success, but they won’t do it for you.”In the early days, Leyton and Martinez shared the work, with Leyton focusing on marketing and conversations with Fresh Coat’s corporate team, and Martinez focusing on quotes, coordinating with teams of painters, supervising and getting reviews.“When you’re new, reviews are very important,” Martinez said. “In the first year, I got about 35 reviews, and we made more than 20 video testimonials for our site.”“Networking is another key activity to grow the business and to secure bigger projects like commercial contracts,” Leyton said. “The residential business benefits from digital marketing, but the commercial business — the big-ticket projects — relies heavily on networking.”The duo forged relationships with local chambers of commerce and made appearances at Business Network International groups to get the name out, and they worked in conjunction with Fresh Coat’s&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/freshcoat/fresh-coat-national-accounts-commercial-support-franchisees-2729620#stories">national accounts team</a> to capture even more business.Encouraged by early success and the amount and strength of support from the franchisor, they expanded to a third territory.“We have a huge support system through Fresh Coat,” Martinez said. “I have great relationships with the teams, and any time I have a question, I feel confident to call someone and ask them what to do. I know they’ll be willing and able to help me.”“Another big support Fresh Coat offers is the smart quote software,” Leyton said. “It’s very useful for us because it has all the tools we need to make the quotes fast. We can present the quote on-site within 30 or 35 minutes. That’s been a huge support for us in streamlining our workflow.”As they have grown, Leyton and Martinez emphasize just how much value the community gets from some of their most straightforward business practices. For example, Martinez shared that clients have noted they chose Fresh Coat because someone answered the phone in a timely manner. Or when the teams show up, the client is pleasantly surprised that everyone is on time.“I think, ‘If I told you I’d show up, of course I’ll be here on time!’” Martinez said. “Even the seemingly small things bring value.
