Though the available funding falls short of the estimated $700 billion needed, there are still resources that can change students’ trajectories.Over the next three to five years, school systems need to spend the money provided for learning recovery.“A lot of schools are carefully studying how to spend the money, which is admirable on the one hand, but on the other hand, we’re in an emergency situation,” Mitchell said. “There’s a sense of decision paralysis as schools try to decide how they can spend the money in a way that will make things better long term. As they spend time weighing the pros and cons, time is ticking by, and we’re quickly approaching the August 2024 expiration date.”With funds pre-approved to be used for tutoring, schools can fund high-dosage tutoring for students — a proven way to combat this learning loss.Another crucial part of this ecosystem is the parents. Parents have the ability to learn more about their child’s individual needs and schools’ test scores, and that information can empower them to ask questions at the district and state levels regarding how funds are being spent.Understanding whether a student is ‘COVID behind’ or truly behind is also key. In some cases, students may be receiving high marks in class, but they are excelling within the bounds of slowed-down learning expectations.“If a parent has their child’s individual test information, there should be a place on the results report, regardless of what the test is, it shows how the child did compared to the rest of the school, district and nationwide,” Mitchell added. “That can be a helpful comparison, but the caveat is that you will be comparing your child to other kids, and we know that other kids are also behind. The plaintiffs, representing several states, claim the fast-food chain has intentionally cultivated hype and scarcity around the McRib through limited-time releases and advertising campaigns, most recently bringing the sandwich back in November. "The name 'McRib' is a deliberate sleight of hand. By including the word ‘Rib’ in the name of the sandwich, McDonald's knowingly markets the sandwich in a way that deceives reasonable consumers, who reasonably (but mistakenly) believe that a product named the 'McRib' will include at least some meaningful quantity of actual pork rib meat, which commands a premium price on the market," the lawsuit said. "McDonald's does this despite knowing that the sandwich in fact does not contain any meaningful quantity of actual pork rib meat — indeed, none at all."Instead, the complaint alleges that the sandwich contains no rib meat at all and is made from restructured pork derived from lower-grade cuts.&nbsp;"Put simply: consumers have been materially misled en masse as a result of McDonald's deceptive labeling and marketing into purchasing sandwiches that they would not otherwise have purchased, or would only have paid less for, had they known the truth," the lawsuit said.McDonald’s strongly disputed the claims.
