With a background rich in experience across leadership roles&mdash;from five years of service in the U.S. Air Force; to a competitive management role with Home Depot; to over a decade teaching in and around southern Los Angeles, Gardena and San Pedro&nbsp;amidst a national recession&mdash;Castillo knows how to not only persevere, but to flourish.

Never one to pass up an opportunity, Castillo is now preparing for the grand opening of her Hermosa Beach, California-based Sylvan Learning center this summer.

Castillo expressed that she&rsquo;s more than excited to bring <a href="https://1851franchise.com/sylvanlearning" target="_blank">Sylvan Learning</a>&rsquo;s unparalleled, <a href="https://1851franchise.com/sylvanlearning/how-sylvan-learning-is-evolving-the-definition-of-edtech-2709401" target="_blank">technology-driven offering</a> and individualized learning plans to students in her territory, which stretches along the coast of South Bay Los Angeles from El Segundo, west to Hawthorne, and then south to Redondo Beach, just west of where Castillo and her three children presently live in Torrance.

&ldquo;I have a lot of passion, experience and expertise that make Sylvan a perfect fit,&rdquo; Castillo said. &ldquo;I love teaching but after 12 years I could see that the system [in which I worked] wasn&rsquo;t making sense for students or for teachers. I knew I needed a change.&rdquo;

Castillo turned to supplemental education franchises to fill that need.

&ldquo;I wanted the support and infrastructure of a successful business model so I didn&rsquo;t have to figure it out on my own,&rdquo; Castillo said. &ldquo;I wanted to position myself for the best chance of success so that I could support myself and my family.&rdquo;

Castillo looked into Kumon, Mathnasium* and Sylvan Learning. Knowing the need for attentive, tailored teaching, she was turned off by Kumon&rsquo;s worksheet-focused model, feeling it didn&rsquo;t individualize sufficiently to meet students&rsquo; needs. Mathnasium&rsquo;s math-centered curriculum caught Castillo&rsquo;s interest at first&mdash;she shared that math is her favorite subject&mdash;but ultimately felt too stagnant for the experienced teacher and businesswoman.

After deciding to sign on, Sylvan&rsquo;s franchise development sales team connected Castillo with existing Sylvan franchisees including <a href="https://1851franchise.com/sylvanlearning/sylvan-learning-franchisees-to-watch-why-multi-unit-owners-todd-crabtree-and-carli-ganet-are-growing-with-the-brand-2706538" target="_blank">multi-unit owner Todd Crabtree</a>, who provided her with valuable insight into all things related to Sylvan ownership.

Next, Castillo went to <a href="https://1851franchise.com/sylvanlearning/sylvan-learning-s-strong-discovery-day-helps-candidates-decide-to-officially-join-the-franchise-system-2708556" target="_blank">Discovery Day</a>&mdash;and later, training&mdash;at Sylvan&rsquo;s corporate office in Hunt Valley, Maryland, just outside of Baltimore. For Castillo, the visit to the Baltimore area felt like yet another instance of fate.

&ldquo;The Sylvan headquarters is 45 minutes away from where my mom lived before she passed away,&rdquo; Castillo said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m brave and I credit my mom with that. She was also a single mom and got her degree after she had kids. I got my degree beforehand because I knew my mom had struggled with that. Later in life, my mom got her CPA and ended up being pretty successful in her 40s and 50s, around my age &nbsp;now. So in a lot of ways, even though I didn&rsquo;t consciously choose to follow her path, I did.&rdquo;

After Discovery Day and training, it came time for Castillo to decide if she wanted to purchase a center from an existing franchisee who was preparing to enter retirement, or if she wanted to open her own.

Challenge-ready Castillo opted for the latter.

&ldquo;I decided to start my own center in Hermosa Beach because it was closer to my home and community,&rdquo; Castillo said. &ldquo;I have friends in every city in my territory; I go there with my kids for their extracurricular activities. I wanted to serve my community, because it has served as home for me and my family for the last 16 years.&rdquo;

Unsurprisingly, Castillo is now full-steam-ahead as she prepares for her center&rsquo;s grand opening this July or August. She shared that she&rsquo;s in the process of working closely with municipal professionals to procure all the permits she needs for operation and is in the process of scheduling a ribbon-cutting ceremony with her local Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, Castillo said that she&rsquo;s excited to open toward the end of summer so that she can offer refresher programs to kids in her community, providing a valuable head start as they head into a new school year.

Asked if Castillo plans on teaching while she grows her staff, the new owner was emphatic.

&ldquo;Definitely; I love working with kids!&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s another reason I love Sylvan. I love their 3-to-1 tutoring model because it allows me the individualized instruction that really helps and supports kids. That was hard to do with 30 kids in a classroom and just one teacher.&rdquo;

Castillo shared that her children&mdash;two high school-aged boys and a 5-year-old daughter&mdash;will also attend the center.

Castillo also shared that she plans to focus on ACT/SAT Test Prep...at least, at her first center.

&ldquo;I plan to open a second location in El Segundo, which is still inside my territory, in about two years,&rdquo; Castillo said. &ldquo;And as my daughter gets more independent, I would like to have one or two more territories on top of that. I&rsquo;m excited to keep growing.&rdquo;

Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Keaney:&nbsp;I looked at a whole bunch of different franchises and industries. The two finalists were TruBlue and kids' sports. What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. My primary contract was one of those that had to be cut, so I lost my job with them after 24 years. Prior to that, I served in the Army.I was a military police captain stationed in Germany, where I served as a military police chief. I oversaw three communities, supporting military personnel, their spouses and children. After losing my job, I knew I was going to get a pretty healthy sum from my pension. I said, “Well, I’m too young to stop working.” So I started looking at franchises. I told Joe — we talk every day — and he said he wanted to go in with me. That’s how we got started. Losing my job at the consulting firm was the trigger.Joseph Jones: Like Ike said, he came to me with the idea that he wanted to look at some franchises. I have a telecommunications background, a degree in international business, and I’m also a disabled veteran. I’ve been transitioning from the telecommunications industry and wanted to do something that allowed me to help the community. Helping people has always been a part of my life. When Ike came to me with the idea, I jumped on it.I thought it would be a great way to get involved in the community and help people. Also, with the economy declining, I wanted a backup plan in case my company faced layoffs. It took us about two or three months to decide. We wanted to be careful and make sure we chose the right fit. I probably feel more comfortable going into business with him than I would on my own because I know what he brings to the table.Our ideas about helping the community align perfectly. Both of us were raised in the Baptist church, and our faith plays a big role in who we are. I feel a deep sense of gratitude and confidence that we’re going to be successful because of that foundation. When I lost my job, a lot of people might have felt stressed or uncertain, but I felt calm. I knew it was time to step out and do my own thing. That’s how we got here.Jones:&nbsp;One thing I’ve learned in life is that challenges can become opportunities. What feels like a setback is often just an opportunity waiting around the corner. It’s all about how you respond. If the situation had been reversed, I know Ike would have been there for me too.
