Burning the midnight oil might become a little more rewarding for 5 million workers. That is, if a new rule proposed by the Obama administration is approved.

"Right now, too many Americans are working long days for less pay than they deserve," President Obama wrote in an op-ed for “The Huffington Post.” "That's partly because we've failed to update overtime regulations for years."

President Obama intends on widening the eligibility for overtime pay with expansionary legislation, which he will further detail during an event in Wisconsin on Thursday.

The proposed overtime revision "goes to the heart of what it means to be middle class in America," said Labor Secretary Thomas Perez.

The rule is now subject to a 60-day public comment period, during which the Obama administration will be unveiling more details regarding proposed overtime eligibility and regulations.
