So, how did you accidentally fall into franchising? What’s your franchise backstory?Natalie Black: I think “accidental” is the right word there. I got lucky enough to know someone who worked at Comfort Keepers, and they brought me in. I fell in love with franchising almost immediately.Powills: Did you understand the complexities of the industry that Comfort Keepers is in, or did that come over time? Most franchisees have some deep personal relationship that led them to the business. Did you understand it initially, or how did that unfold for you?Black: I didn’t really understand it beforehand, but, like everyone, I think we all have some connection to home care. I had experienced it personally with a parent, so I understood the impact it made in my family’s life, but I didn’t understand the business side until later. That’s something I think a lot of our franchisees relate to, as it’s often a personal experience that draws them in, as you mentioned.Powills: As you've progressed in your career here at Comfort Keepers, has your vision for the business evolved or has it remained focused on a specific goal?Black: The vision has evolved a bit, especially as our ownership has changed, which does affect the dynamic. But our main priority has always been clear: How do we support our franchisees? How do we, as a brand, continue to grow and best support them? As time, technology and the industry change, we evolve too, but the mission to support our franchises, clients and caregivers has stayed consistent.Powills: If you look at your timeline in Comfort Keepers or even the broader industry, I think one major change has been the increasing competition. However, despite that, demand hasn’t decreased. In fact, it’s almost as if even with more competition, we still don’t have enough resources to fully meet demand. It’s only going to become more pressing to find solutions for senior care, as people look for ways to age in place comfortably.Black: Absolutely. It’s definitely evolving, but I think everyone recognizes the importance of what we’re doing. There’s a lot of investment in helping people stay home, but home care remains a local business, which is why franchising is such a great fit. You can’t just throw money at it and replace the local touch that Comfort Keepers provides. We benefit from having franchises that know their communities well while also having a large brand presence, allowing us to partner with companies trying to support home care on a larger scale.Powills: I love that your vision centers on supporting franchisees, which makes them your primary customers. For a franchisee, their main focus is likely caregivers and the people they serve, but from a leadership perspective, you’re focused on supporting your franchisees first so they can, in turn, support their clients. Is that an accurate assessment?Black: Yes, that’s incredibly accurate. Our franchisees do an amazing job caring for both their caregivers and clients. For us, the focus is on making sure we provide franchisees with everything they need so they can fulfill their mission. They are the bridge, and we want to give them all the tools they need to be successful.Powills: If I’m advising a franchise buyer, I talk about finding the unique point of differentiation but also about betting on the people, not just the brand. You’re focusing on supporting your franchisees, which is a strong differentiator. What else sets Comfort Keepers apart in a competitive market?Black: Our biggest differentiator is that we talk about “elevating the human spirit.” In senior care, there’s often a lot of fear associated with aging and health. Of course, safety is a priority, but we’re also focused on helping people live fulfilling lives while they age. Bringing joy into their lives and emphasizing the positive side of aging makes a significant difference.Powills: That’s wonderful. I think a gap in the industry is addressing the mental well-being of adult children who care for aging parents. The children are often so consumed with making sure their parents are comfortable that they don’t take care of their own mental health. It’s an area the industry could focus more on.Black: Absolutely, and a big part of that is communication. Often, the child lives far away, which is why they need home care in the first place. Keeping them updated about the care their parents are receiving can make a huge difference in their peace of mind.Powills: What keeps you up at night?Black: From a business perspective, I worry about the regulatory side of franchising and home care. It’s constantly changing, but there’s more support for home care now than when I started at Comfort Keepers. The pandemic highlighted its importance, and that added support helps me sleep a bit better at night.Powills: Licensing for home care is handled mostly at the state level. Do you think that’s the right approach or should it become more standardized?Black: While it adds complexity for us with a national presence, home care is inherently a local business and I believe states often know best what’s needed in their areas. So, I support much of it being at the state level, despite the added complexity.Powills: I think it’s important for those making regulatory decisions to listen to those on the front lines. The same is true for senior care and franchising in general.Black: I agree completely. That’s why we’re active in associations like the Home Care Association of America, where our COO sits on the board. It’s crucial to stay involved to ensure our franchisees’ experiences are represented and that we can influence decisions impacting our industry.Powills: For people considering franchising with Comfort Keepers, what do you want them to know that they might not see on a website?Black: Our ideal candidate is someone with both a business mindset and a desire to make the world a little better.
